On December 20, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province said that in An Ngai commune, Long Dien district, a rabies outbreak in dogs was recorded and many people were exposed to the rabies virus.
Previously, a yellow dog (a native breed), about 3-4 years old, with an unknown owner, ran loose and bit many people in An Hoa hamlet, An Ngai commune.
Seeing that the dog was showing signs of aggression, the people organized a siege to capture it. On the way to escape, the dog ran into another house and continued to bite some more dogs and cats. Afterwards, the people caught and destroyed the dog.
Through initial verification, it was recorded that 5 people were bitten by the above dog. These cases were all injected with anti-rabies serum and rabies vaccine on December 18, and are currently in stable health. At the same time, the authorities also took samples to send for testing, with results showing that the dog was positive for rabies virus.
After discovering the new outbreak, the provincial CDC requested the Long Dien District Health Center to coordinate with the health department and related units to conduct an investigation to detect people bitten by the dog, and mobilize people to get vaccinated against the disease. People at high risk such as veterinary staff, people who slaughter dogs and cats... are also mobilized to get vaccinated.
Recently, Ba Ria - Vung Tau recorded 2 deaths due to rabies, including 1 case in Long Dien district on December 19; at the same time, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine also recorded 2 animal rabies outbreaks in Suoi Nghe commune, Chau Duc district.
Faced with the above situation, the CDC of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province recommends that people proactively take measures to prevent rabies. The most important thing is that immediately after being scratched or bitten by a dog or cat, they need to get vaccinated against rabies or anti-rabies serum promptly and completely according to the instructions of medical staff.
