Near the Lunar New Year 2026, the amount of goods arriving at 3 wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City increased sharply. In parallel with ensuring abundant supply, markets and functional sectors have simultaneously strengthened inspection and traceability to protect consumer health.

Increase supply, strictly control from the market entry stage

In the last days of the year, the buying and selling atmosphere at wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City becomes bustling. Stalls of meat, seafood, vegetables and fruits continuously import goods, trucks come in and out bustlingly.

Going to the early market in Binh Dien, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai (Phu Lam ward) said: "I buy more food during Tet than usual, so I prioritize going to wholesale markets because goods are abundant and prices are stable. The most important thing is to ensure food safety so that my family can use it with peace of mind.

Representatives of Binh Dien Market Management and Trading Company said that the unit coordinates with the Food Safety Management Team of Region 10 (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety) to strengthen inspections before, during and after Tet. Many measures have been implemented such as propaganda through loudspeakers, hanging banners, inspection of appearance - perception of goods, periodic and unscheduled sampling.

The work of disinfecting and veterinary hygiene in the meat industry of livestock and poultry has also been strengthened. Imported goods account for a small proportion, about 3 - 5% of output, inspecting origin documents, packaging, and labels according to regulations.

At Thu Duc wholesale market, the unit coordinates with functional forces to strengthen control of food safety work at the market. The market also established a food safety control team to regularly go to the field, remind small traders to comply with regulations and at the same time, deploy and apply software in the management of tracing the source of goods imported into the market.

According to Mr. Le Van Tien - Director of Hoc Mon Wholesale Market, the market proactively develops plans to prevent the situation of mixing in poor quality goods and goods that do not ensure food safety and put them on the consumption market. In parallel, strengthen inspection and supervision focusing on strong consumption groups such as pork, vegetables and fruits of all kinds and control the source of goods imported into the market.

Increase surveillance around markets, prevent spontaneous trading

Representatives of Binh Dien Market Management and Trading Company said that illegal trading points on Quan Trong Linh street and surrounding residential areas have decreased significantly, security and order and traffic in front of the market gate have been improved. However, this activity still exists in many forms, with large outputs, especially livestock and poultry meat. These items are being traded without ensuring food safety and hygiene conditions, without the control of functional sectors on origin, food safety... potentially affecting consumer health and unfair competition with legitimate traders in the market.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huy - General Director of Thu Duc Agricultural Products Market Management and Trading Company, currently, the business situation of traders in the market has decreased, mainly due to spontaneous business activities in residential areas around the market and roads on National Highway 1A, roads around the market in Tam Binh ward operating strongly.

Regarding this issue, a representative of Tam Binh Ward People's Committee said that the locality is coordinating with the market management board to inspect and handle spontaneous trading points in front of the market gate.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Khanh Phong Lan - Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety informed that the unit is conducting food safety assurance work before, during and after Binh Ngo Tet 2026. Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety has established 31 inspection teams, conducting inspections of 1,320 establishments. At the same time, organizing surprise inspections when there are reports from the press. In this peak period, the unit promotes inspections at wholesale markets and vehicles transporting food imported into markets, and at the same time, deploys a sampling plan at all 3 wholesale markets to monitor food safety, promptly detect and handle violations.
