On January 14, the People's Committee of Nghe An province announced that it had just issued a decision to lease more than 2.62 hectares of land (phase 1) in Nghi Lien commune, Vinh city to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) to implement the project to expand and renovate the aircraft parking lot of Vinh International Airport. The project has a total investment of more than 233 billion VND.
Currently, Vinh International Airport can only accommodate a maximum of 6 aircraft parking positions, while the demand during holidays and Tet is up to 8 - 9 positions. The existing runway is 2,400 m long, last upgraded in 2003, and can only accommodate reduced-load A320/A321 aircraft or equivalent, and cannot accommodate large-body aircraft such as A350, B777, B787... This leads to limitations in opening long-haul international routes.
In addition, the quality of the runway has deteriorated, requiring regular maintenance and repair. The airport also does not have a parallel taxiway system, affecting the take-off and landing times of flights. Therefore, the expansion and renovation of Vinh International Airport has become urgent.
Previously, ACV proposed to the Ministry of Transport a plan to expand and renovate the runway and apron. On February 27, 2024, the People's Committee of Nghe An province issued a decision approving the investment policy and selecting ACV as the project investor.
The project aims to expand and renovate the aircraft parking lot, increasing the total number of parking positions from 6 to 9 positions meeting code C standards. The project will be implemented in Nghi Lien commune, Vinh city, on an area of over 5.97 hectares, including land temporarily handed over by the Air Defense - Air Force Service since 2000 and an additional expansion area of over 2.62 hectares transferred by Division 371.
The project is expected to be completed within 12 months from the completion of site clearance, land allocation and construction permit issuance. The project's operating period is determined to be 50 years from the date the investor receives the land allocation decision.
According to the national airport and airport system planning for the period 2021-2030, Vinh International Airport is ranked as a level 4E airport according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). With a total area of over 557 hectares, this port has a designed capacity of 8 million passengers per year, meeting the increasing demand for passenger and cargo transportation in the North Central region.
