The afternoon of September 12 was a rare time for police officers of Chuong Duong Ward (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) to rest after nearly 2 days of rising flood waters, "threatening" the safety of residential areas along the Red River.
Currently, flood water has receded slightly in some residential areas in Chuong Duong ward. Many households are making efforts to clean up their houses.
Speaking with Lao Dong, Lieutenant colonel Nguyen Chien Thang - Deputy Chief of Police of Chuong Duong Ward - said that due to the low-lying terrain, near the Red River, just a few days of heavy rain will cause serious flooding in residential areas here.
Although flood water is showing signs of receding, there are still many large-scale flooding areas in the ward, such as alley 823 Hong Ha street, where flood water is up to the necks of adults.
"The ward police force still maintains 7 officers and 5 inflatable boats to support people 24/7" - Lieutenant colonel Thang said.
Since the floodwaters rose on September 11, many households have come to the ward police station to leave their important belongings. This is also the only place on the street with electricity, some people come to charge their phones, cook rice and wait for the water to recede.
During their lunch break, some police officers turned on the dryer to dry their phones that they accidentally dropped in the water while helping transport food and carrying people to the emergency room in time.
"Yesterday, flood water on Chuong Duong Do - Bach Dang street rose very quickly. Some elderly people with health problems needed emergency care but specialized vehicles could not reach them.
The task force must immerse themselves in the water to support, carry, and bring people out for emergency treatment in a timely manner, ensuring their health and safety," said Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Chien Thang.
Mr. Pham Tuan Long - Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem District (Hanoi) - said that the recent floods have affected 3,000 households with about 12,000 people in Chuong Duong and Phuc Tan wards.
Hoan Kiem District has prepared the highest level of preparedness to respond to flooding caused by the rapid rise of the Red River in Chuong Duong and Phuc Tan wards, avoiding being passive or surprised, ensuring absolute safety for people, and continuing to overcome the consequences caused by storm No. 3.
Mr. Pham Tuan Long also emphasized the very important role of the Police and Military forces in responding to floods in the area in recent days, especially in an area with high population density and a large population concentrated in the riverside area like Hoan Kiem.
"The police and military forces play a core role, coordinate well in rescue work, ensure absolute safety for people's lives, and minimize damage to people's property" - said the leader of Hoan Kiem District People's Committee.
