At the end of the year, it's about digging up sidewalks

Hà Lê |

In the last days of the year, especially near Tet, sidewalks in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are being "dug up" to upgrade and replace sidewalk stones.

These works not only destroy the urban beauty but also seriously affect the daily life and activities of the people. The question is, is there any other solution to improve this condition?

At the end of the year, when the demand for travel and shopping increased, the streets of Nguyen Xien, Le Van Luong, Nguyen Ngoc Vu in Hanoi or the central area of Ho Chi Minh City such as Paris Police Station and City Book Road were all in a state of disarray.

Although the sidewalk upgrade is necessary to ensure traffic safety and improve infrastructure, the construction time is unreasonable. Especially at the end of the year, when travel demand increases, this makes it difficult for people to move, poses a potential risk of traffic accidents, and also affects the business activities of households along the streets.

The pebbled sidewalks caused dust to fly everywhere, clinging to stores, affecting the health and beauty of the city. Many shop owners have reported that their business has been significantly reduced because customers are afraid to stop, and the sales space is covered with corrugated iron fences and construction materials.

A resident of Le Van Luong Street shared: "Customers have difficulty stopping their vehicles, the dust flies all day, we are very tired. I don't understand why every year we slice and re-slice, and after a while, we continue to dig up." This is a common reality that many Hanoians have to face at the end of each year.

Traffic has also become a serious problem. When the sidewalk is dug up, pedestrians are forced to walk on the road, causing congestion and increasing the risk of traffic accidents. An important issue raised in the discussions was the quality of the project and sidewalk management. Although the government has issued documents requesting strict supervision of the progress and quality of the project, the situation of "scraping and re-paving" continues to occur every year. The big question is, are there shortcomings in management or is it the ineffectiveness in monitoring and inspecting construction works?

To address this situation, a comprehensive and sustainable solution is needed. First of all, it is very important to plan sidewalk construction at the right time. City authorities should avoid organizing construction at the end of the year, especially when people's travel and shopping needs increase. If there is a need for construction, construction units need to take measures to minimize the impact on traffic and people's lives.

There needs to be a comprehensive solution on the quality of the project, avoiding the situation of rebuilding after a short time.

The renovation of sidewalks at the end of the year, especially in crowded cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, needs to be carefully reviewed. Therefore, it is necessary to apply reasonable solutions in construction, management of construction quality and choosing a reasonable construction time to help create a civilized, safe and convenient urban area for people.
