Coastal erosion causes heavy damage
According to Lao Dong reporters, recently, Tan Thanh beach (Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang) has been continuously overwhelmed by strong waves, with some places digging 4-8m deep into the mainland. The fierce waves that washed up on the shore day and night also swept away hundreds of cubic meters of sand and soil, causing trees along the coast to be uprooted, and shops gradually lost customers.
Mr. Phung Tan Luc (a sales staff at Tan Thanh beach, Hoi An Tay ward) informed that coastal erosion not only affects the environmental landscape but also causes heavy damage to business owners in the tourism, restaurant, hotel and coastal service sectors.
"Many sections of the coast have been hit by strong waves, causing frog jaws to crawle 4-8m inwards. Shops along the sea are forced to gradually retreat towards the shore, gradually having few customers. Many businesses and restaurants here have recently saved themselves by stacking sandbags to make temporary breakwaters to block waves and spread coconut fiber carpets, but this option is only temporary, unable to overcome the power of nature," said Mr. Luc.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Trung (a trader in Hoi An Tay ward) shared that many times his shop had to move to the shore because of deep erosion, and trees along the coast were uprooted by waves. People and businesses here hope that local authorities and authorities will soon take measures to save the coastline, helping people feel secure in doing business and trading. In particular, there is a plan to deploy and reinforce serious landslides.
Many solutions to prevent coastal erosion are deployed
To prevent erosion of Hoi An coast, from the beginning of 2025, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province (old) has continued to start the project to prevent erosion and sustainably protect Hoi An coast with a total investment of VND 982.239 billion (equivalent to 42 million EURO).
According to Lao Dong reporter, this capital is mobilized from loans from the French Development Agency (AFD), aid from the European Union (EU) and local budgets with an expected implementation period until 2026.
The Hoi An coastal erosion prevention and sustainable protection project is not only a protective project but also closely linked to the safety of more than 1,300 households, the sustainable development of the tourism industry, aiming to completely solve the erosion problem with the main solution of building an underground wave-breaking dike from a distance, about 250m from the shore, combined with sand dumping at the beach, restoring the original state of the beach.
Vice Chairman of Da Nang People's Committee Le Quang Nam informed that Da Nang is currently a coastal city, the socio-economic center of the Central Highlands. The sea not only creates a clean landscape and living environment but also a driving force for the development of tourism, services, trade, logistics and maritime transportation.
However, in recent years, Da Nang City and many provinces in the Central region have been continuously affected by climate change, strong storms, high tides and rising sea levels. Coastal erosion is no longer a single natural phenomenon but has become a constant challenge for the sustainable development of the city and the region.
Notably, the situation of change and instability of beaches in recent times has been relatively complicated, especially in My Khe, Cua Dai, Tam Tien and some sections of the southern coast of the city, seriously affecting infrastructure, tourism activities and coastal community livelihoods.
In the past, Da Nang City has spent more than VND1,600 billion to promptly prevent erosion and stabilize the coastline; A number of major projects have been implemented such as the 550m long Tam Tien coastal protection embankment, the Tam Hai coastal protection embankment with a length of about 1.5km and is especially the overall construction cluster to prevent erosion and sustainably protect Hoi An coast with a length of 6.4km - Vice Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee Le Quang Nam emphasized.
