Many seasonal workers come to pick coffee.
Raw coffee prices in the Central Highlands provinces are currently at 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg. Compared to the same period in 2023, coffee prices have nearly doubled.
Dak Lak province is at the peak of the coffee harvest season. Many garden owners are willing to pay high wages to hire workers and cover accommodation and travel expenses to harvest crops on time.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quang traveled nearly 600km from Thua Thien - Hue province to Dak Lak to pick coffee for hire. According to Mr. Quang, the coffee picking job can last about 2 months. This is the third year that Mr. Quang has temporarily left his wife and children at the end of the year to go to the Central Highlands to work for hire.
"Every year, at the end of the year, there is little seasonal work in my hometown, so I decided to go to Dak Lak to pick coffee. If I deduct all living expenses and work hard, I can bring home nearly 20 million VND for my family to celebrate Tet. For ordinary workers, this is not a small number in the current context," Quang added.
In reality, the number of seasonal workers coming to Dak Lak to pick coffee mainly comes from many provinces across the country. The wages that garden owners pay workers are fluctuating from 220,000 - 250,000 VND/day.
If a worker is agile and has endurance, he will receive a contract to pick coffee by quantity to have a higher income.
Ensure security and order
Due to the nature of workers coming from all over to harvest coffee, authorities in Dak Lak are actively managing administration to ensure security and order.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tran Tuan - Head of Krong Buk District Police - emphasized: "In the locality, there are many workers from all over the country picking coffee for hire for garden owners. In addition to creating the best conditions for seasonal workers to earn a living, the police force also tightens administrative management of their residence."
"The local police force will guide garden owners to strictly comply with providing information about hired workers and arranging adequate accommodation for them. Garden owners must minimize the risk of workers causing disorder in the facility," added Lieutenant Colonel Tuan.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quang Vinh - Head of Krong Nang District Police, every coffee harvest season, district police leaders will go to the grassroots to grasp the situation and simultaneously deploy measures to ensure security and order.
People from other places coming to the district must declare their name and temporary residence clearly so that the authorities can update them.
The district police also closely coordinated with the leaders of the People's Committees of communes and towns in the area to implement a community model, where people help each other protect coffee gardens and avoid theft.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Lak province, the total coffee area of the province is about 210,000 hectares, with an average annual output of over 500,000 tons of coffee beans.
In the 2024-2025 crop year, coffee output in Dak Lak may decrease by 5-10% compared to the previous crop year. The reason is that many coffee areas suffered from drought and water shortages during the dry season of 2024.
