Damaged traffic lights, posing a potential safety risk
After the reflection of Lao Dong Newspaper, the Traffic Safety Committee of Quang Tri province affirmed that this is an issue that has been reviewed and reported in advance, and is currently waiting to consider allocating funds to promptly repair and overcome.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, the Traffic Safety Committee (TSC) of Quang Tri province said that the unit has sent an official dispatch to the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Finance regarding the allocation of funds to repair damaged and degraded traffic light clusters in the northern area of the province (formerly within the old Quang Binh province boundary).
According to the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, over the years, traffic light clusters have been effective in reducing traffic accidents.
However, after a long time of exploitation in harsh weather conditions, some signal light clusters have been operating unstably. Common errors include: unstable control cabinets, blue - red - yellow lights lose signal, broken reverse counter lights, walking lights and right turn lights that do not work synchronously. This situation not only causes difficulties for traffic participants but also spoils the urban beauty and poses a potential risk of insecurity.
Proposal to allocate emergency funding
Through review, the entire northern area of the province currently has 39 traffic light clusters that need urgent repair. The Provincial Traffic Safety Committee assessed that in the context of many major political and cultural events taking place in the area at the end of 2025, if not promptly resolved, the risk of traffic congestion and accidents will increase.
To promptly handle the situation, the Traffic Safety Committee of Quang Tri province recommended that the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Finance consider allocating about 2.5 billion VND from the traffic safety budget. After the decision was made, the unit proposed to assign the Department of Construction, the standing agency of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, to organize the repair and replacement of damaged items.
People have repeatedly reported the loss of traffic lights at some important intersections in the Northern region, including the Tran Hung Dao - Pham Van Dong - To Huu roundabout.
This is an intersection with high traffic density, especially during peak hours from 11am - 11:30am and 5pm - 6pm. The confusion of traffic lights and the closing of them in the morning has made traffic chaotic and dangerous for road users.
According to the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, timely repairs not only contribute to ensuring traffic safety but also improve regulating capacity on key routes, serving the travel needs of people at the end of the year. In particular, when many major political and social activities are organized, the transport infrastructure system, including traffic lights, needs to be maintained and repaired even more.
"Although traffic lights are only a part of the infrastructure, they directly affect safety and order on the streets. It is very necessary to arrange funds for early repairs to avoid prolonged damage leading to the risk of unfortunate accidents" - a representative of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee emphasized.
The Provincial Traffic Safety Committee also recommends that during the repair process, relevant units need to pay attention to synchronizing the system, applying new technological solutions to improve traffic management efficiency. This is a necessary preparation step for urban modernization and smart traffic management in the future.
