In the afternoon of July 1, monitoring on satellite cloud images, weather radar and lightning positioning system showed that thunderstorms are developing strongly, causing showers with thunderstorms and lightning in many localities in the South, including Can Tho and Vinh Long, Dong Thap, Tay Ninh, Dong Nai, Lam Dong provinces.
In the next 0-3 hours, thunderstorms will continue to develop, causing showers with thunderstorms and lightning in the above areas, then tend to expand to neighboring localities. Common rainfall is from 2-10 mm, in some places over 10 mm.
The meteorological agency warns that during thunderstorms there is a risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail, strong gusts of wind at level 5-8 (8-21 m/s). Heavy rain in a short time can also cause localized flooding in low-lying areas.
In the next 24-48 hours, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will have its axis passing through the Central region and the central East Sea combined with a low pressure area gradually strengthening, raising its axis to the North. Southwest monsoon maintains medium to strong intensity. Above, the subtropical high pressure continues to encroach westward with stable intensity, with its axis passing through the North.
From 3-10 days, the intertropical convergence zone will continue to move northward. The Southwest monsoon will still operate at medium to strong intensity, while the subtropical high pressure will remain stable and from around July 4th there will be a trend of gradually withdrawing to the East.
Therefore, from 7 pm on July 1 to 7 pm on July 3, the Southern region will experience moderate rain, heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms in the afternoon, evening and night. Total rainfall is commonly 70-120 mm, in some places over 120 mm.
In the next 48-72 hours, the South will continue to have heavy rain with common rainfall of 50-90 mm, in some places over 100 mm. This widespread rain is forecast to last until the end of July 5, 2026.
