On July 24, according to a representative of the Quang Tri Airport Project Management Board, the construction area of the Quang Tri Airport (airport) Project entered the peak of prolonged hot and dry weather, directly affected by southwest wind (Laos wind) with very high intensity. This is an objective weather factor that strongly increases the phenomenon of dust spreading at the construction site.
In particular, the project scale has a very large ground with a length of about 3 km, a width of about 500 m, the airport ground elevation has been elevated according to the technical design. Therefore, when encountering strong winds blowing through, the fine layer of dust on the construction surface easily rolls up and spreads widely to surrounding residential areas.
To limit the impact on people, a representative of the unit said that the construction site currently maintains 7 specialized water trucks, operating in rotation continuously from 5:00 am to 6:00 pm daily on official roads and key areas. However, due to the extremely dry weather, dust suppression work still faces many challenges.
Faced with the above situation, the Project Management Board is committed to synchronously implementing many technical solutions and reorganizing construction to more thoroughly control pollution in the coming time.
Specifically, construction vehicles will be planned and diverted to move centrally along fixed service roads to optimize watering and dust suppression. Use K90 soil (a type of soil with high humidity and adhesion, serving for later finishing grass planting) to immediately cover surface areas that have met the conditions to prevent dust from spreading.
In addition, the Quang Tri Airport Project Management Board requested contractors to review and reduce the number of vehicles operating regularly from 250 vehicles to about 30-40 vehicles/day. Closely coordinate with local authorities and departments and branches to arrange more water supply points, and at the same time mobilize more specialized irrigation vehicles to serve the construction site.
Previously, Lao Dong Newspaper reflected the situation of a "dust storm" swirling from the construction site into Nhi Ha village (Cua Viet commune), causing the lives of dozens of households to be seriously disrupted. Notably, fine dust covering the area makes visibility limited, many families are forced to take young children to other places to "evacuate" and must wear masks even when inside the house.
Quang Tri airport project is invested in the form of public-private partnership (PPP), started in July 2024 with a total investment of more than 5,800 billion VND. Recently, the project has officially been adjusted from a 4C-class airport to a 4E-class, allowing the reception of modern wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Currently, items such as air traffic control towers and passenger terminals have basically completed the main structural items. The runway item has been completed.
