Spreading the bamboo shoot growing model for high economic efficiency
Bac Son commune, once the "poverty center" of Mong Cai city with 70% of its population being ethnic minorities such as Dao and San Chi, has now escaped poverty thanks in part to support from Bac Son Border Guard Station.
The soldiers here have encouraged people to plant bamboo and bamboo shoots to both preserve the soil, prevent landslides during the rainy season and create livelihoods for people.
Leading reporters to the bamboo hill, Mr. Dang Ngoc Phu, from Pec Na village, said: "Pec Na village has a gentle terrain, and soldiers have been guiding people to plant bamboo to prevent landslides for many years. We plant spiny bamboo, mai bamboo, and octagonal bamboo. 1 hectare of bamboo when harvested annually also gives 60 million VND, collecting shoots and weaving household tools such as weaving baskets, winnowing, and making shoulder poles."
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trung Tuyen - Deputy Head of the Bac Son Border Guard Station said: "Up to now, the unit has coordinated with the People's Committee of Bac Son commune and local people to plant over 3,000 bamboo holes to help people develop the economy, contributing to protecting the border and national landmarks."
