Hanoi will start construction of urban railway line No. 2 Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao section in October 2025, aiming to complete the project after 5 years.

The Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao urban railway line 2 is a key transport project of the capital. The project is 11.5km long, with 8.9km underground and 2.6km elevated. This metro line has 7 underground stations and 3 elevated stations.

The total preliminary investment of the project is nearly VND35,600 billion, an increase of more than VND16,000 billion compared to the investment policy first approved in 2008.

The starting point of the project is Nam Thang Long along Nguyen Van Huyen extended road - Hoang Quoc Viet - Hoang Hoa Tham - Thuy Khue - Phan Dinh Phung - Hang Giay - Hang Duong - Hang Ngang - Hang Dao - Dinh Tien Hoang - Hang Bai; the end point intersects with Tran Hung Dao street.

Regarding the preparation for the groundbreaking of urban railway line No. 2, Mr. Nguyen Ba Son - Deputy Director of the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB) said that MRB has mobilized consulting units from Japan to complete the preparation procedures and basic design to submit to the City People's Committee in early August.

Regarding site clearance, the unit has also closely coordinated with localities to promote implementation.

This is the first railway line in Hanoi to develop towards TOD. The scope of Xuan Dinh depot will be adjusted to create a new residential area around the station in the direction of TOD. Therefore, we also recommend that the Hanoi People's Committee simultaneously implement the project to expand Nguyen Hoang Ton Street to maximize the investment efficiency of the project" - Mr. Nguyen Ba Son shared.

MrB's leaders added that for urban railway line No. 2, immediately after starting construction in October 2025, the unit will conduct bidding for other packages to be simultaneously deployed in 2026 and set a target of completing the progress by 2030.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Son said that up to now, the site clearance work to implement the project has reached 90%. Currently, only the biggest problem is left in the Xuan Dinh depot area and a small part in Tay Ho ward.

"The unit is consulting with people around the project. After consultation, the people's opinions will be accepted and included in the appraisal file" - Mr. Son said.

On the local side, Mr. Ngo Ngoc Vi - Vice Chairman of Xuan Dinh Ward People's Committee said that the government has cleared the land with an area of 14 hectares in the depot area. The area for starting construction and implementing the project has a clean site that has been fenced with corrugated iron to protect and prevent encroachment.

According to Mr. Ngo Ngoc Vi, the site clearance work has been implemented by the locality since 2022, and up to now, there are still 187 households with residential land that has not been recovered. The Ward People's Committee is reviewing the dossier and implementing steps to reclaim land in accordance with the provisions of law.

"In the immediate future, the People's Committee of the ward will organize a meeting with people to listen to comments. There are still problems with the resettlement area for these households in Phu Dien ward. In the coming time, the locality will strengthen coordination with relevant units to implement resettlement for people" - Mr. Vi said.
