Hanoi is urgently implementing 10 flood control projects under an emergency order. Including two underground regulating tanks in the area in front of Hang Da market and a vacant lot at Duong bridge slope. Projects are being accelerated, striving to basically complete before April 30 to proactively respond to the upcoming rainy and storm season.
Right before the Binh Ngo Lunar New Year 2026, the area in front of Hang Da market was enclosed with corrugated iron to construct an underground flood control tank. According to the design, the tank has a capacity of about 2,500 m3, nearly 52 m long, 15 m wide and 4.5 m deep.
The project applies assembly technology with 48 precast culvert components instead of the on-site concrete pouring method, helping to shorten construction time. The project is expected to be completed before April 30, 2026.
Mr. Vo Phuong Nam - Deputy Head of Technology and System Management Department, Hanoi Technical Infrastructure Management Center - said that precast culvert components have been fully prepared, ready to serve construction according to schedule.
When completed, the underground regulating tank will contribute to reducing flooding in areas of streets such as Duong Thanh, Bat Dan and some neighboring streets.
According to Mr. Hoang Quoc Khanh - Deputy Commander of the project (under UDIC Corporation), so far the construction unit has completed the work of pressing piles around the tank wall, preparing for the deep soil excavation phase of about 6.5 m.
Mr. Khanh said that the biggest difficulty in the construction process is that the Old Quarter area has many intersections, along with a dense underground system below. It is expected that on the night of March 5, the unit will deploy excavation from Nguyen Van To street to Hang Da street area.
Meanwhile, the underground regulating tank in the Duong bridge slope area (Phu Dong commune) has a capacity of about 1,800 m3. Currently, the project is under construction of pile driving. The tank has a depth of 6 m, is equipped with 2 pumps and a large drainage system because this area is frequently flooded due to the low road level.
The Project Management Board and the contractor set a target to complete the project before March 31, 2026. The construction of an underground regulating tank combined with strengthening the pumping station is expected to help this area reduce flooding in the rainy season.
Representatives of the contractor said that the inspection and review of progress are carried out daily. If problems arise, they will be promptly resolved, and at the same time, construction units will be urged to accelerate progress to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
