Lao Cai province is managing and maintaining 5 National Highways, with a length of 542km and the Noi Bai - Lao Cai Expressway, 72km long, passing through the province; 16 provincial roads, with a length of 990.77km.
In recent years, Lao Cai has continuously invested in the transport infrastructure system, helping to promote the border economy.
Among them, we can mention the Tran Hung Dao extended road project started in 2014, the scale of the route is 4.1km long, the roadbed is 45m wide. The route has a total project investment of 483.609 billion VND from the central and local budgets.

In early May 2025, it was noted that for items such as roadbed, vertical drainage, and cross- drainage, the asphalt paving of the road surface has also been completed.
Currently, people can travel on the route more quickly and conveniently.
Some remaining items of electrical and lighting systems are being urgently completed to ensure safety when people move.

The leader of Lao Cai Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board said: "Our road items have been completed. But due to adjusting the plan, in recent times, at some locations, the unit has to dig the median strip up to repair. Currently, the unit is under construction of the lighting system, the finishing time is this month, or at the latest in 1-2 weeks."
When mentioning the transport infrastructure of Lao Cai border province, it is impossible not to mention the investment project to build a border bridge across the Red River in Ban Vuoc commune (Bat Xat district) and connecting infrastructure.
The total investment is 1,490 billion VND, the Central budget supports 950 billion VND, the local budget matches 540 billion VND.

According to records, many items of the traffic road connecting on Provincial Road 156 in the project have been paved with asphalt and trees have been planted.
As for the border bridge project across the Red River connecting Bat Xat (Vietnam) - Ba Sai (China), the total investment capital is about 282 billion VND and is currently under construction.
After completion, the bridge will play an important role in connecting and promoting economic development between Lao Cai - China along with the road bridge at Kim Thanh border gate.
Mr. Dang Van Truong - Officer of the Lao Cai Province Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board said: "After the construction period, the upgrading, renovation and asphalt paving for many sections on Provincial Road 156 has been completed. The border bridge project started construction at the end of March and will be completed after 18 months of construction".

Thanks to improved traffic infrastructure, immigration activities through Lao Cai International Border Gate are increasingly bustling.
According to statistics from the Lao Cai International Border Guard Station, during the April 30 - May 1, 2025 holiday, more than 20,000 people entered and exited through the border gate.
Along with that, there are 1,625 import-export vehicles passing through Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. II, including 541 export-export vehicles and 1,084 import-export vehicles during the holidays.

According to the leader of Lao Cai province, this is a positive signal showing the key role of transport in promoting trade and developing the border economy.
Not only serving economic goals, the development of transport infrastructure is also an important lever to ensure national security, enhance regional connectivity and sustainably eliminate hunger and reduce poverty.
