Many trees died
In late September, reporters from Lao Dong Newspaper were present at the square area and green park in the Hue City's concentrated administrative area, which is expected to be a highlight of green space in the heart of the modern city. However, it is easy to see that a series of trees planted here have died, with bare branches, and no signs of survival.
With the naked eye, it is clear to see straight trunks, about 3m high, that were once planted at the same time, now withered, broken tops, or even rotten holes from the core. In addition, many other trees, even if not completely dead, are still in a state of stunted, yellow water eels, and weak growth. It is estimated that more than 30 trees in this park area have completely died, the rest are also in a state of exhaustion.
Mr. Nguyen Hoai Nam (a resident of Thuan Hoa ward) shared that the newly planted trees had not died for long, while the shade around the administrative area was lacking. "After a while, the trees withered and then died, looking at it was both painful and regretful" - Mr. Nam said.
Responding to Lao Dong Newspaper, a representative of the Hue City Urban Development and Investment Project Management Board said that they have grasped the situation and the unit will organize replacement plantings for all dead trees when the weather conditions are favorable.
Find causes, have alternatives
Not only in the central park, on many new roads in Hue City, where trees are expected to bring landscape and shade, the situation of mass tree deaths is also happening. Recorded on the Phu My - Thuan An route, opened to traffic at this time in 2023, a series of trees on both sides of the road have bare leaves, many trees are dry and have rotten trunks. This route was previously designed with a median strip for growing shade trees, to improve the landscape and create a green space throughout the inner city to the sea.
Currently, it is estimated that more than 40 trees have died on this section. Many other trees, although still alive, are stunted, slow to grow, and do not meet the standards for height and canopy. In some locations, trees have been arbitrarily removed by people due to drought and fatigue, occupying the area.
A similar situation occurred on the Cho Mai - Tan My route, where the traffic project is still under construction. Although the project has not been completed, many trees planted along both sides of the road have tilted and died. There are trees that are tilted along the roadside, posing a potential risk of falling when it rains or is windy. According to the reporter's research, tree planting projects today all have quite strict technical procedures: From the stage of designing, selecting tree varieties suitable for the terrain, to construction, new planting and maintenance.
A representative of the Hue City Urban Development and Investment Project Management Board informed that the unit is giving specific statistics on the number, types, reasons for tree deaths and thereby has a suitable replacement and remedial plan.
