Standing on the left and right dykes of An Thanh Dong commune (Cu Lao Dung district, Soc Trang province) and seeing the shrimp pond that had partially collapsed, Mr. Truong Thanh Hao could not hide his anxiety.
In recent months, when the tide is high, landslides have occurred more often. My family's shrimp pond right next to the Hau River has now completely eroded, so we can't raise it anywhere. If I can do anything, I have to give up, now I grow bamboo and silkworms to prevent landslides," said Mr. Hao.
Not far away, Ms. Thach Thi Phai - a resident of the same commune - said that the dike was invested in and built by the State, even building a concrete road on the dike surface. "After a while, the landslides continued. Some landslides reached rural roads, up to 1.5 m deep. Some cracks encroached on the mainland for more than 100 m. Now I just hope the State will soon fix it so that people can live and produce with peace of mind," said Ms. Phay.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cu Lao Dung district, the Ta and Huu dike dike routes longer than 80 km are important dykes to prevent high tide, protect production and people's lives. However, only from the beginning of the year, this dike line has recorded 6 landslides, with a total length of more than 350 m. Particularly, 4 of them are considered serious, with landslide length of more than 250 m. There are more than 200 households living in the affected area, with a total threatened production area of up to 365 hectares.
According to the assessment of the specialized agency, the cause of the landslide is due to the characteristics of the bent flow of the Hau River to create a great pressure on the dike bank. Along with the weak ground, the fact that some shrimp farmers abandoned the pond, not reinforcing the banks, causing the landslide to increase.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dac - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cu Lao Dung district - said that the locality has implemented temporary solutions such as setting up warning ropes, placing signs, and reinforcing emergency landslides to ensure people's safety. At the same time, mobilize local shock forces to closely monitor developments and be ready to respond when necessary.
The People's Committee of Cu Lao Dung district has also issued a document requesting the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, Project Management Board 2 and the Soc Trang Province Irrigation Department to provide emergency funding to overcome serious landslides.
Facing this situation, the People's Committee of Soc Trang Province is proposing the Ministry of Finance to consider supporting the central budget for the project to upgrade the dike of Ta River, Huu Huu Cu Lao Dung, put into the medium -term public investment plan for the period of 2026 - 2030.
