Dau Tieng Lake releases overflow to respond to storms, warns of the risk of flooding downstream

Thanh Vũ |

From 7:00 a.m. on November 25, Dau Tieng Lake began the 8th overflow of the year with a flow of 28-200 m3/s and is expected to last until December 2.

The regulation is being implemented in the context of complicated storms, low tides and continuous increases in the amount of water flowing into the lake.

According to the Southern Irrigation Exploitation Company, the lake's water level is currently at an elevation of 23.90 m, 0.5 m lower than the pre-flood level. The discharge flow can be adjusted depending on the rainfall in the basin and the tidal intensity downstream of the Saigon River. Management agencies have notified localities to proactively respond, especially residential areas living along the river.

Under normal conditions, the maximum discharge of 200 m3/s does not cause significant flooding. However, when heavy rain coincides with the release time, the water can rise rapidly, causing local flooding in low-lying areas. This is a situation that happened at the end of October, when Dau Tieng Lake and Tri An Hydropower Plant both released floodwaters during the high tide in the 9th lunar month peaking at 1.77 m, causing many areas in Ho Chi Minh City to be deeply flooded. Some points such as Binh Quoi tourist area and Thanh Da residential area were severely affected; Tran Xuan Soan, Pham Huu Lau, and National Highway 50 were flooded for a long time.

Faced with the impact of storm No. 15, many reservoirs in the South Central and Southeast regions are also having to overflow to reduce peak flood pressure, especially after recent historic heavy rains.

Dau Tieng Lake has a basin of more than 270 km2, a capacity of 1.58 billion m3, playing an important role in providing domestic water - production, regulating floods and preventing saline intrusion downstream of the Saigon and Vam Co Dong rivers. Management agencies continue to closely monitor to ensure the safety of the project and minimize the impact on the lives of people in the downstream area.
