Ho Chi Minh City will start the Nguyen Khoi bridge project on December 19, 2025, creating a new connection axis between the South and the center, contributing to reducing congestion at the southern gateway.

The Nguyen Khoi bridge and road project is one of the key projects selected by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to start construction on the occasion of the 14th National Congress of the Party.

The policy of building Nguyen Khoi bridge and road was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in 2016 with a total initial capital of about 1,250 billion VND, then increased to more than 2,800 billion VND due to scale adjustment. However, for 7 years, the project could not be implemented due to lack of capital.

By the end of 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council continued to adjust the investment policy, raising the total capital to more than VND 3,700 billion.

Of which, VND1,392 billion is for compensation, resettlement support and relocation of technical infrastructure, VND1,619 billion is for construction costs.

The project affects 147 cases, including 21 organizations and 126 households, with a total reclaimed area of 8,938 m2; of which 12 households must be completely relocated.

The Nguyen Khoi bridge project includes a concrete overpass system of more than 2.5 km long, 6.5 - 25.5 m wide, connecting District 7 (formerly), crossing Te Canal and Ben Nghe Canal through District 1 (formerly),

In addition to the main bridge, the project also includes a series of important connecting items: the bridgehead road is more than 1.1 km long, with a cross-section of 6.5 - 35 m; Nguyen Khoi service road is 626 m long, 26.5 - 30 m wide; two Hoang Trong Mau service roads are 222 m long, 9 m wide on each side; renovate and expand Vo Van Kiet Street towards Ben Nghe Canal, 863 m long, with a cross-section of 47.8 - 63.5 m.

Drainage, lighting, trees, embankments and traffic organization systems will be built synchronously according to the plan.

When completed, Nguyen Khoi Bridge and Road will form a new traffic axis to help vehicles move from District 7 (formerly) to District 1 (formerly) via overpass, directly connecting to Vo Van Kiet Avenue.

The project is expected to significantly reduce the load on routes that are often congested such as Nguyen Huu Tho - Kenh Te bridge, Duong Ba Trac, Nguyen Tat Thanh, while also solving traffic pressure in the previous internal area of District 4.
