According to the Northern Hydrometeorological Station - Lao Cai Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, through monitoring satellite images, lightning positioning data and weather radar, in recent hours, many strong convective cloud areas have appeared in the province, causing showers and thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain.
Rainstorms have appeared in many communes and wards in the province. At the same time, convective clouds from Son La and Phu Tho areas are continuing to move towards Lao Cai, increasing the risk of extreme weather.
The meteorological agency forecasts that in the next few hours, convective clouds will continue to develop and expand, causing showers, with heavy rain in some places accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds over a wide area.
Areas such as Minh Luong, Duong Quy, Lien Son, Son Luong, Mo Vang, Mau A, Phong Du Ha, Dong Cuong, Chan Thinh, Xuan Ai, Khanh Hoa and many neighboring localities are likely to be affected.

Notably, unfavorable weather appeared right at the time thousands of candidates in the area entered the 2026 high school graduation exam. Heavy rain and thunderstorms can cause difficulties for travel, especially in mountainous areas, areas at risk of landslides or localized flooding.
Functional agencies recommend that candidates and parents regularly update weather developments, proactively arrange time to arrive at the exam site earlier than expected, prepare full raincoats and vehicles to ensure safety when moving.
Schools and exam sites also need to develop plans to respond to extreme weather situations to ensure the exam takes place safely and conveniently.
According to warnings, in thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind, which can cause trees to fall, works to be damaged, affect traffic infrastructure and potentially cause unsafety for people.
The level of natural disaster risk due to tornadoes, lightning, and hail is warned at level 1.
