On the morning of July 30, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment held a consultation conference on the Agricultural Production Project to reduce emissions for the period 2025 - 2035. This project aims to increase added value in the crop production chain, ensure sustainable development in the context of increasingly complex climate change and contribute to the National Domestic Decision-making Contributor (NDC).
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung emphasized the urgency of the issue. According to statistics from 2020, the agricultural sector emitted about 116 million tons of carbon, of which the agricultural sector alone accounted for nearly 80%, mainly from rice cultivation.
"This reality requires urgent model conversion, taking immediate action in crop production towards low emissions and sustainability," Deputy Minister Hoang Trung affirmed.
The draft Project sets ambitious goals, including reducing at least 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sector by 2035. The solutions will focus on key crops with large areas and high potential for emission reduction such as rice, corn, coffee, pepper, dragon fruit and some other fruit trees and industrial crops.
Commenting at the conference, experts, scientists and business representatives contributed many valid opinions, focusing on key groups of solutions such as perfecting strong enough policy mechanisms to encourage people and businesses to participate; applying advanced and smart farming technical packages; building a transparent and effective measurement, reporting and appraisal (MRV) system.
The early completion and implementation of the project is expected to create strong momentum, helping the Vietnamese agricultural sector not only fulfill its environmental responsibility but also move towards a green, competitive agriculture. Thereby, contributing significantly to the country's Net Zero goal by 2050.
