Ho Chi Minh City will build an elevated road on National Highway 13, the North-South axis and Binh Tien bridge to increase traffic capacity and reduce congestion at the city's gateways.

On July 30, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said it was urgently completing the feasibility study report for three key projects including the expansion of National Highway 13, upgrading the North-South axis road (Nguyen Huu Tho Street) and Binh Tien Bridge and Road.

It is expected that all three projects will be submitted to competent authorities for approval in the third quarter of 2025 and simultaneously start construction in 2026, and be completed in 2028.

The National Highway 13 expansion project is about 5.9 km long, stretching from Binh Trieu Bridge to Vinh Binh Bridge. The route will be expanded to 60 m, with 10 lanes to meet the increasing travel demand.

Notably, in this project, a 3.2 km long overpass will be built from Binh Trieu intersection to Binh Phuoc intersection. The elevated route has a scale of 4 lanes, with a design speed of 80 km/h.

Below are two parallel routes, each side has 3 lanes, allowing mixed vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

The total investment of the project is estimated at nearly 20,900 billion VND, implemented under the BOT (build - operate - transfer) form.

Of which, the Ho Chi Minh City budget spends about VND14,619 billion to serve compensation, resettlement support and site clearance. The remainder is mobilized by investors through BOT contracts.

The project to upgrade the North - South axis road (Nguyen Huu Tho Street), from Nguyen Van Linh Street to Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, has a total length of 8.6 km. The route will be expanded to 60 m, accommodating 10 lanes.

Of which, the 7.2 km long elevated road section is built with a scale of 4 lanes, designed speed of 80 km/h.

Below are parallel roads on both sides, each side has 3 lanes, with a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

The route also has two important intersections at Nguyen Van Linh Street and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway to increase connectivity.

The project has a total preliminary investment of about VND 9,894 billion, also under the BOT form.

The Binh Tien bridge and road project has a total length of 3.66 km, built entirely on high ground, with a road surface width of 30 - 40 m, accommodating 4 - 6 lanes.

The route starts from the Binh Tien - Pham Van Chi intersection (old District 6), overcomes many obstacles such as Vo Van Kiet Avenue, Tau Hu Canal, Cay Sung Street (old District 8), Doi Canal, Ta Quang Buu Street and ends at Nguyen Van Linh Avenue (old Binh Chanh District).

In addition to the main route, the project also builds branches connecting to important routes such as Vo Van Kiet, Binh Dong, Hoai Thanh, Ta Quang Buu and Nguyen Van Linh streets.

The total investment capital is nearly VND6,300 billion equal to the Ho Chi Minh City budget capital, of which the cost of compensation and site clearance is more than VND3,369 billion and the construction cost is more than VND2,915 billion.
