The company offers compensation
Navetco Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company (Navetco) is the supplier of Navet-LpVac vaccine to prevent lumpy skin disease. After being injected with Navet-LpVac vaccine, many dairy cows in Lam Dong suffered from diarrhea and died.
Navetco has provided compensation and support for affected livestock households as follows:
Compensation is 55,000 VND/kg of live cattle; 60,000 VND/kg of pregnant heifers; 65,000 VND/kg of non-pregnant breeding cows and 70,000 VND/kg for pregnant breeding cows. For dead cows that are handled by the breeding households themselves, with confirmation from the authorities, the support level is from 7 to 10 million VND/cow.
Navetco also offers support for treatment costs and damage costs of 1-6 million VND/cow for sick dairy cows. The time for calculating compensation is from the date of the first case to September 26.
At a recent meeting between relevant parties to agree on a compensation and support plan, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Lan - General Director of Navetco - apologized to the farmers whose cattle herds were affected.
According to a Navetco representative, since 2023, the lumpy skin disease vaccine Navet-LpVac has been granted a circulation certificate by the Department of Animal Health. Since then, Navetco has provided more than 300,000 doses of vaccine to 30 provinces and cities nationwide. The incident in Lam Dong is unusual.
The above compensation and support levels are based on information and practical advice from livestock companies, livestock households in the area and consulting units; at the same time, the financial capacity and the most feasible plan that the company can implement are also considered.
Navetco also requires the party receiving compensation and support to commit not to complain or have any related disputes after receiving compensation and support.
People think the compensation price is low.
Ms. Phan Thi Thu (52 years old, living in Bong Lai village, Hiep Thanh commune, Duc Trong) said that her family has 24 dairy cows. In July 2024, the cows were vaccinated against lumpy skin disease. After that, the entire herd got diarrhea, including 1 milking cow that died, and 1 7-month-old cow had a miscarriage. Farmers suffered huge losses.
According to Ms. Thu, her dead mother cow weighed about 700kg. If the company's compensation price is applied, her family will only receive 35 million VND, equal to 50% of the value of the damaged mother cow.
"The company offered low compensation, my family could not afford to buy mother cows to continue milking. Currently, companies sell mother cows for over 80 million VND/cow," Ms. Thu shared.
Similarly, the family of Mr. Nguyen Duy Thanh (in Bong Lai village, Hiep Thanh commune, Duc Trong district) is also one of the households that suffered heavy losses due to their dairy cows being infected and dying after vaccination.
Mr. Thanh said that his family has 26/30 dairy cows infected with disease and diarrhea. So far, 3 mother cows that are being exploited for milk have died, causing a loss of about 240 million VND.
“The three dead cows weighed about 600kg each. With the compensation offered by the company, the family only received 126 million VND, and could not buy back the three cows at the milking stage. Because the current price of a cow is over 80 million VND/cow,” said Mr. Thanh.
According to Mr. Thanh, currently, there are also some households selling milk-producing cows for 60 - 65 million VND. However, most of the dairy cows have been vaccinated and are infected, so he does not dare to buy them.
According to the people, with the compensation price offered by the company, they can only buy calves for production. The price of a calf is about 10 million VND/calf but it needs to be cared for for another 2 years before it can be used for milk.
Previously, Lao Dong Newspaper reported that Lam Dong authorities had organized vaccinations against lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows in the area from July 22 to 31.
According to local residents, 7-10 days after the injection, dairy cows showed signs of weakness, stopped eating, coughed, foamed at the mouth, had bloody diarrhea, and died. To date, 550 dairy cows have died in the province.
