On September 21, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) announced the progress of Metro Line 2 project (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong).
According to MAUR, construction is being deployed simultaneously at 6 underground stations including: Hoa Hung (ST04), Le Thi Rieng (ST05), Pham Van Hai (ST06), Bay Hien (ST07), Ba Queo (ST09) and Pham Van Bach (ST10).
At the same time, the contractor is urgently preparing the necessary conditions to deploy the construction of the remaining stations on the entire route.
MAUR said that it is working with contractors to optimize the construction organization plan, striving to put TBM tunnel excavators into construction from August 2027.
The underground section of Metro Line 2 includes 2 single tunnels, with a total length of more than 9 km, stretching from Ben Thanh station to the Truong Chinh - Pham Van Bach intersection area.
Each tunnel has an outer diameter of 6.8 m and an inner diameter of 6.2 m. The maximum depth from the bottom of the tunnel to the natural ground is about 30 m.
According to the plan, Tham Luong depot will complete construction and receive the first train on July 30, 2029.
The project is expected to complete trial operation and system safety certification by December 31, 2030.
Metro No. 2 was started in January 2026, with a total investment of more than 55,000 billion VND from the Ho Chi Minh City budget.
The route has a length of nearly 11.27 km, of which about 9.3 km is underground and about 2 km is elevated. The entire route includes 10 underground stations, 1 elevated station and a depot in Tham Luong.
From Ben Thanh station, Metro Line 2 passes through 14 wards including Ben Thanh, Ban Co, Xuan Hoa, Hoa Hung, Vuon Lai, Nhieu Loc, Tan Hoa, Tan Son Nhat, Bay Hien, Tan Binh, Tan Son, Tay Thanh, Tan Son Nhi and Dong Hung Thuan before ending at Tham Luong depot.
In the initial phase of operation, Metro Line 2 is expected to use a 3-carriage train, with a maximum speed of about 80 - 110 km/h, and a transport capacity of about 14,400 passengers/hour/direction.
When put into operation, the Ben Thanh - Tham Luong Metro line is expected to create an additional large-volume public passenger transport axis, connecting the central area with the Northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, and at the same time contributing to reducing traffic pressure on existing routes.
