Lao Cai - Local authorities are mobilizing maximum forces to clear landslide points to bring relief goods to people isolated by floods.

In recent days, prolonged heavy rain has caused landslides on a series of key traffic routes in Che Tao commune - the most remote highland area of Lao Cai province.

Soil and rocks spilled onto the road surface, many points were completely cut off, the telecommunications cable system of Viettel and VNPT was broken, and 2 temporary bridges were swept away by floodwaters, making travel and supplies difficult.

According to Che Tao Commune People's Committee, as soon as light sunshine appeared, the Commune Civil Defense Command mobilized "4 on-the-spot" forces, officials, civil servants and people to organize 24/24 hour duty, urgently overcoming the consequences of natural disasters.

Forces focused on clearing soil and rock at large landslide points on inter-village roads. The route from the commune People's Committee center to Ta Dong village was temporarily opened to traffic after many landslide points were handled.

In particular, on the route from Ta Dong to Na Hang residential area, functional forces and people urgently erected a 22m long temporary bridge to replace the bridge swept away by floods. This temporary project helps to reconnect the traffic route, creating conditions for transporting food and necessities to the isolated area for many days.

Meanwhile, the route from Che Tao village to Ke Ca and Pu Va has also been leveled with soil and rocks, ensuring that motorbikes can travel. Currently, the Ke Ca route to Hua Dan village (Khoen On commune, Lai Chau province) is the only road that can transport essential goods to Che Tao commune.

In parallel with traffic restoration, the locality focuses on ensuring safety for people in areas at risk of landslides.

Currently, local forces have supported the relocation of some households in Ta Dong village to safe places. Through review, the whole commune currently has 29 households located in areas at high risk of landslides and flash floods that need urgent relocation, including 21 households in Che Tao village and 8 households in Ta Dong village.

For households in Che Tao village, the Commune People's Committee is proposing two resettlement locations, about 1km and 8km from the village center.

However, both options are related to the area of protection forest and special-use forest, so it is necessary to be allowed by competent authorities to convert land use purposes to build new residential areas as well as invest in electricity and domestic water.

For 8 households in Ta Dong village, the locality has arranged land for 4 households to build new houses; the remaining 4 households are expected to move to a location about 5km from the village center.

On the afternoon of July 22, in an exchange with Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Giang A Chang - Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee of Che Tao commune said: Currently, 3 villages including Ta Dong, Na Hang and Che Tao are still isolated due to landslides cutting off key traffic routes.

Initially, people are self-supplying food, if the road is cleared for a long time, forces will supply food from Lai Chau province through forest roads that can be traveled by motorbike.

To soon bring Che Tao out of the situation of division, Che Tao commune also proposed that the People's Committee of Lao Cai province and departments and branches urgently support machinery, vehicles, and manpower to handle major landslide points on the road from Mu Cang Chai to the commune center and inter-village roads.
