According to functional agencies, among the 5 sets of remains just collected at Le Thi Rieng Park (Hoa Hung ward, Ho Chi Minh City), one set of remains was accompanied by a small piece of paper, believed to be extracted from a decision of a military unit.
Although it has been damaged over time, many important contents can still be read on paper such as: "South Vietnam Liberation Army. Due to work needs... capacity, ethics of cadres, with proposals from units... 962. Battalion Command decides. Comrade Huynh Van Quen, Deputy Squad Leader... Unit Command 962... Comrade Quen...".
The Steering Committee requests relatives of martyrs nationwide, especially families with relatives named Huynh Van Quen or who used to work at unit 962, to contact functional agencies to provide information and coordinate verification.
Through verifying the unit code, Military Region 7 determined that Mr. Quen was a liberation soldier of Battalion 1 Long An - now Company 2, Battalion 1 Long An.

On the morning of July 6, the Steering Committee for searching, repatriating and identifying martyrs' remains of Ho Chi Minh City organized a ceremony to deploy the search and repatriation of martyrs' remains at Le Thi Rieng Park.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong - Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee - said that after two days of excavation and exploration in point A area of the park, functional forces discovered a mass burial trench about 25 m long and about 3 m wide.
Initially, 5 sets of martyrs' remains and many valuable artifacts were found to serve the identity verification work.
This search was launched after a survey process from June 15. The Ho Chi Minh City Command coordinated with the Institute of Design (General Department of Logistics - Technology), Hanoi University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Ben Thanh Water Supply Joint Stock Company to use ground-penetrating radar technology to survey three areas in Le Thi Rieng Park.
Initial research results determined that these are locations suspected of having mass graves of martyrs who bravely sacrificed in the General Offensive and Uprising of Spring Mau Than 1968.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong said that Ho Chi Minh City will strengthen the application of science and technology, continue to use ground-penetrating radar, geophysical methods and DNA technology to improve accuracy and shorten the time to identify martyrs' remains.
