Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Bui Van Cong, Cu hamlet, Muong Dong commune, said that his family lives in an area at high risk of landslides. During Typhoon Yagi (Typhoon No. 3 in 2024), soil and rocks flooded down half of the house.
On the night of August 23, realizing the danger of unsafety, Mr. Cong's whole family went to relatives' houses to take shelter. By the morning of August 24, the hill behind was still leaking water, so the family was still quite worried.
If it continues to rain heavily tonight, my family will still evacuate to ensure safety," Mr. Cong said.
Mr. Bui Van Ky, Head of Cu hamlet, said that the area has 2-3 points at risk of landslides. One location has 36 households waiting for the resettlement project to relocate.
On the night of August 23, two households including the family of Mr. Bui Van Cong and Mr. Bui Van Duong left their houses to a safe place.
According to Mr. Ky, a submerged point overflowing the bridge currently has high water levels. The force in the hamlet coordinates with the commune government to be on duty 24/24 hours, regularly checking and warning people.
Muong Dong Commune People's Committee warns that after many days of heavy rain, the water in the streams in the area has risen, the flow is swift. Some spillways and areas across streams have been flooded, posing a potential danger to people and vehicles.
Local authorities require people not to go through underground spillways, overflow bridges, deeply flooded road sections or places with strong currents.
People are also advised not to wade, swim or drive vehicles through dangerous areas; and at the same time manage children, not let them play near rivers and streams.
Households living near rivers, streams or areas at risk of landslides need to proactively monitor weather developments and promptly notify the authorities when detecting unusual signs.
Previously, Phu Tho Provincial Police said that due to the impact of storm No. 4, from August 22 to the night of August 24, the southern area of the province is forecast to have very heavy rain, with common rainfall of 100-200mm, locally over 400mm.
Police units and localities are required to closely monitor weather developments, review areas at risk of flooding, flash floods, and landslides; prepare forces and vehicles according to the "4 on-the-spot" motto, ready to support people when situations arise.
Functional forces recommend that people regularly update rain and flood forecasts and warnings; limit movement through deep flooded areas, fast-flowing water, underground spillways and areas at risk of landslides.
People need to prioritize ensuring life safety, not be subjective to the complicated developments of storms and floods.
