On June 16, a heavy rain suddenly fell on many central districts of Ho Chi Minh City, causing Bui Vien Street (District 1) to be partially flooded from 20-40 cm. This situation has caused difficulties for people and tourists to travel, forcing shops to busy cleaning and unblocking sewers.

According to records, the rain started at around 3pm and lasted for more than 30 minutes with quite a large intensity. The rainwater could not drain in time, causing many sections of Bui Vien Street to be deeply flooded, with black water, pedestrians had to wade through the water.

Mr. Bui Van Sy (District 1) said: " Heavy rain in a short period of time caused the road to be flooded, making it very inconvenient for people to travel".

According to the Southern and Central Highlands Hydrometeorological Station, warnings were issued about thunderstorms developing in areas such as Binh Chanh, District 5, District 6 and then expanding, causing rain in many places in Ho Chi Minh City.
The agency forecasts that in the next few hours, showers and thunderstorms may continue in some districts, with common rainfall from 2-10 mm, some places may be over 10 mm. During thunderstorms, people need to be on guard against tornadoes, hail and strong gusts of wind at level 5-7 (equivalent to 8-17 m/s), along with the risk of local flooding in low-lying areas.
The cause of thunderstorms was determined to be the influence of a low pressure trough with an axis through the North Central region, connecting with the circulation of storm No. 1 currently active in the southwest of Hainan Island (China). At the same time, the southwest monsoon operating at an average intensity also contributed to causing rain in the Southern region, including Ho Chi Minh City.
