When the tide recedes, many beach areas in Giao Ninh commune, Ninh Binh province become bustling with people making a living.
According to reporters of Lao Dong Newspaper, when the water recedes, from about 2 pm, people bring rudimentary tools to catch small scales, earning extra income. Scales are usually in the tidal area, where there are concrete blocks blocking the waves.
Quickly prying each piece of scale attached to the concrete blocks, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung (resident of Giao Ninh commune) said that when the weather turns cold, it is also the scale season. When the tide recedes, scales stick densely to the blocks of concrete components blocking the coastal waves, so it is very easy to harvest.

This season going to the cold sea is messy, but because we have to earn extra income, we have to try to dig for parrots. To keep my body warm, I wear a raincoat outside, wear a hat from head to neck, and wear boots. Every day, I usually go to the beach from 2 pm to 6 pm, and collect about 10 bags of parrots," Ms. Dung recounted.
According to local people, the hunt for "heaven's fortune" (catching parrots) only lasts for about the last two months of the year and depends entirely on the water level. Specialized tools for prying and separating parrots are used. After separating, they will be put in a basket to drain some sand and then pour it into a net bag.

Weeding in the cold windy season is very hard, we have to take advantage of every hour, the water is shallow. Going to sea a lot becomes a habit, when starting to work, it's cold, working for a long time makes people gradually warm up, even sweat. This job is so hard, but we still accept it because we have additional income for our families at the end of the year. Working continuously for many hours, some days I earn 20 bags, selling them also earns millions of VND," Mr. Cao Van Tuan (in Giao Ninh commune) shared.
Every afternoon, a quick-witted person can collect several dozen bags of parrots, weighing about 40 - 60kg/bag, selling price about 60,000 - 70,000 VND/bag. Many people with long-term experience in picking parrots can earn millions of VND in just one afternoon.
The scales after being caught are purchased by traders right at the yard to feed lobsters and some other seafood.
