Ho Chi Minh City - Facing heavy rain in some places over 300mm from September 18-24, Ho Chi Minh City strengthens pumps, collects garbage, and clears sewers to limit the risk of flooding.

According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, in the next 7 days, Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces and cities are likely to experience moderate rain, heavy rain to very heavy rain. Total rainfall is commonly 150-300mm, with some places over 300mm.

The meteorological agency warns that heavy rain may cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban areas, industrial parks, riverside areas, and canals.

This forecast was made in the context that many areas in Ho Chi Minh City have just experienced heavy rains causing widespread flooding.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Management and Technical Infrastructure Center (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction), in the rain on the evening of September 10, the highest rainfall recorded was more than 153mm, causing 33 roads and 2 areas to be flooded.

In the former Thu Duc City area, some roads were flooded 40-45cm deep, including To Ngoc Van and Nguyen Duy Trinh.

In Thao Dien area and Thu Duc market area, Quoc Huong, Duong Van Cam, Ho Van Tu streets are sometimes flooded about 30cm. These are areas that often experience flooding when heavy rain appears.

Notably, the An Phu Development Urban Area area and An Phu underpass were heavily flooded. In front of Imperia An Phu apartment building, the water was about 40cm deep, while the HC1-02 underpass at An Phu intersection was flooded from 0.8 - 1m deep.

In addition, heavy rain in the afternoon of September 15 caused the underpass in front of the new Mien Dong Bus Station (Long Binh ward) to be flooded nearly half a meter.

Regarding the forecast of heavy rain in the coming days, the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Management and Technical Infrastructure Center said it is strengthening solutions to improve drainage capacity.

In which, the unit focuses on dredging the drainage system, renovating manholes and water inlets; and at the same time organizing garbage collection at water inlets before, during and after rain to avoid garbage obstructing the flow.

In the area of the parallel roads of National Highway 22 and Nguyen Anh Thu, maintenance and dredging work is carried out regularly. Units open manhole covers, collect garbage in front of collectors and install pumps at necessary locations.

The center also arranges rain duty forces, ready to respond when flooding occurs to limit the impact on people's travel and daily life.

A notable solution is that the Cau Nuoc Len pumping station has been built, and mobile pumps with a capacity of 2,000m3/h have been installed to increase drainage capacity for the Hoc Lam Lake area when it rains heavily.

In Binh Trung ward, the Center is repairing and supplementing tide control valves at the discharge gate. At the same time, a 2,000m3/h capacity pump is installed at the discharge gate to the Giong Ong To river, preventing flooding for Nguyen Duy Trinh street.

Regarding the serious flooding point at An Phu underpass, the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board - the investor of the An Phu traffic intersection construction project said that it has requested the contractor to add a 3-pump machine with a total capacity of 830m3/h to strengthen the existing pumping station.

In addition, the contractor built sacks around the pumping station area to prevent water from overflowing, ensuring that the pump can operate at the correct capacity and focus on treating the amount of water in the tunnel.
