Accidents decreased sharply in all 3 criteria
According to statistics from the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), during the 9-day Lunar New Year holiday of At Ty 2025, the number of traffic accidents nationwide decreased by nearly 37% compared to the Tet holiday of Giap Thin 2024 (a decrease of 258 cases), the number of injured people decreased by more than 38% (a decrease of 232 people) and especially the number of deaths due to traffic accidents decreased by nearly 38% (a decrease of 126 people).
Previously, statistics also showed the positive effects of Decree 168: From January 1 to 15, 2025, the number of traffic accidents nationwide decreased by more than 34%, the number of deaths decreased by more than 11% and the number of injuries decreased by more than 34% compared to the same period in 2024.
The number of traffic accidents in two major cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, has decreased sharply after Decree 168 took effect (from January 1, 2025), especially during the Lunar New Year.
Compared to the Giap Thin Tet holiday, during the 9-day At Ty Tet holiday in the capital, there were 21 fewer traffic accidents, 6 fewer deaths and 31 fewer injuries. In Ho Chi Minh City, there were 10 fewer traffic accidents, 7 fewer deaths and 4 fewer injuries.
During the recent Tet holiday, the authorities detected and handled nearly 56,000 cases of traffic order and safety violations, imposing fines of more than VND172 billion; revoking driving licenses and professional certificates for nearly 3,000 cases, deducting points from more than 7,000 driving licenses, and temporarily seizing 428 cars and nearly 21,000 motorbikes.
From January 25 to 10:00 a.m. on February 2, 445 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, killing 209 people and injuring 373. There were still more than 17,000 cases of alcohol concentration violations detected. Compared to the same period of the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, this number has decreased by 20,365 cases (54.29%).
Decree 168 is effective
Assessing the positive impact of Decree 168, the leader of the National Traffic Safety Committee affirmed that on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025, traffic order and safety across the country were basically ensured, the number of accidents, deaths and injuries all decreased sharply compared to the same period last year, especially violations of alcohol concentration regulations continued to decrease sharply compared to the previous year.
The positive results are thanks to the early and drastic participation of the Government, ministries, branches and localities in ensuring traffic safety and order during Tet. In particular, the promulgation and application of Decree 168 is considered a strong push, contributing to changing people's traffic behavior.
"Dangerous violations such as alcohol concentration, running red lights, speeding... have all decreased significantly, in some places by 30-40%. This number proves that people's awareness of obeying traffic laws is improving," said the leader of the National Traffic Safety Committee.
Colonel Nguyen Quang Nhat, Head of the Traffic Accident Investigation and Resolution Department - Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), commented: The main goal of sharply increasing the fine level according to Decree 168 is to raise awareness of compliance with traffic laws, thereby contributing to reducing accidents, congestion and the current disregard for road traffic laws. After more than 1 month of implementation, Decree 168 has had a positive impact in that traffic participants have a better awareness of complying with the law. This is evidenced by the number of violations handled decreasing by more than 40% compared to the same period last year.
In the coming time, the authorities will continue to resolutely implement the Law on Road Traffic Safety and Order and Decree 168, strictly handling violations to ensure people's health and lives and social order.
