According to reporters of Lao Dong Newspaper, the landfill located in Sam Son ward is currently overloaded. Waste is piled up into large blocks, as high as mountains.

Around the landfill is a system of ditches and water reservoirs with a pitch black color, emitting a very unpleasant odor. This situation directly affects the lives of people, especially households living near the landfill area, when they have to face a strong stench every day.
Notably, the amount of domestic waste generated daily is still collected and gathered here, causing the situation of overload and pollution to become increasingly serious.
To limit the spread of odors, local authorities and functional forces previously used tarpaulins to cover the garbage collection area. However, according to residents, the odor still spreads to surrounding residential areas.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Hao, born in 1942, residing in Hop Thanh neighborhood, Sam Son ward, Thanh Hoa province, said that the landfill has been polluting for many years. Especially during the peak tourist season, the amount of garbage brought in increases sharply, water from the landfill flows out black, accompanied by an unpleasant stench.
Not only my family but many households living next to the landfill always feel insecure and uncomfortable. Even some households have had to abandon their houses to move to other places to live. The pollution situation also affects thousands of households in the area," Mr. Hao said.

According to Mr. Hao, at the beginning of 2026, when there was information that the landfill would be closed, households were very happy, even holding parties. However, just a few days later, the landfill was temporarily allowed to receive garbage again, causing people to be disappointed and worried about prolonged pollution.
Many households in Hop Thanh neighborhood said that their biggest wish for many years has been for the landfill to be closed soon and moved to another location. However, to date, this wish has not yet become a reality.
Representatives of the leaders of Sam Son Ward People's Committee said that the landfill has been overloaded and caused pollution for many years but has not been completely handled. Currently, the amount of domestic waste generated in Sam Son ward and Nam Sam Son ward still has to be collected and gathered here.
According to the previous plan, the collection of waste at this landfill will end at the end of May 2026. However, the collection time is then extended to the end of August 2026. When the landfill closes, all waste will be transferred to the planned waste treatment area in Nam Sam Son ward" - representative of Sam Son Ward People's Committee informed.
