Building embankments by the stream to protect residential areas before the rainy and flood season

Lao Cai - After serious landslides caused by floods, the Thia stream embankment is being erected with shields to protect the safety of residential areas.

In the last days of July, the construction site of the project to repair and urgently overcome Thia stream embankment, Cau Thia ward (Lao Cai province) is always operating at full capacity.

Excavators and bulldozers are continuously working to reinforce serious landslide locations caused by floods.

In 2025, the circulation of storm No. 10 caused landslides on many sections of Thia stream bank, especially in the area at the foot of Thia bridge, Na Duong residential group and the end of Noong Phai bridge abutment.

Floodwaters swept away many areas of production land, directly threatening houses and transportation infrastructure of people along the stream.

To overcome the consequences, the Construction Investment Project Management Board No. 1 of Lao Cai province was assigned to be the investor of the project to repair and urgently overcome landslide points with a total investment of more than 53.5 billion VND from the state budget and other legal capital sources.

The construction contract was signed on July 17, 2026. Immediately after that, the contractors urgently mobilized manpower, equipment, gathered materials and deployed construction.

At the construction site, dozens of workers and many machines were mobilized to dig foundations, build dykes, straighten flows, and create construction ground.

Mr. Ha Van Toa, a worker at Phuoc Long Co., Ltd., said that the unit takes advantage of favorable weather to work overtime day and night, both ensuring progress and strictly complying with requirements on labor safety and construction quality.

According to the design, a nearly 300 m long embankment will be built in Na Duong residential group area. The embankment base uses large-sized reinforced concrete pipes, filled with gravel inside to increase erosion resistance. Above is a system of beam frames and protective concrete panels for the embankment slope.

Meanwhile, the dyke section protecting the foot of Thia bridge, more than 182 m long, is also being synchronously constructed to stabilize the flow and protect the residential area.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Cong - representative of Phuoc Long Co., Ltd. - said that the current time is entering the rainy season, so the pressure of progress is very high. The unit has organized 3 consecutive shifts of construction, mobilizing maximum machinery and manpower, and at many times working until midnight.

According to Mr. Cong, the immediate goal is to complete the dike system to protect the concrete pouring area at the foot of the embankment, and at the same time strive to complete about 100 m of the first embankment and two phases of embankment roof concrete pouring by mid-August.

In parallel with that, the construction front in the Noong Phai bridge area is also being accelerated. Here, a dyke section of more than 38 m long will be built in combination with reinforced concrete walls to protect the bridge abutment, and at the same time restore the access road with a concrete road surface of 5.5 m wide.

Mr. Luong Van Thien - Secretary of the Party Cell of Na Duong residential group - said that people are very excited when the project is implemented.

People hope the project will be completed soon so that they no longer have to worry about landslides every time it rains heavily, feel secure in production and stabilize their lives," Mr. Thien said.

When completed, the project will handle key landslide points on the Thia stream, protect the transportation system, production land and the lives and property of hundreds of households, contributing to reducing natural disaster risks before the rainy and flood season.
