Lai Chau - The government and organizations, philanthropists are joining hands to help Muong Than people overcome losses and stabilize their lives.

Unfinished roofs after the flood

In the last days of July, returning to Muong Than commune, traces of the flash flood are still present everywhere.

Mud and soil cover many areas, house foundations are only bare foundations, trees are scattered, and many households still have to stay at schools, health stations or relatives' houses after losing their homes.

In Chit village - the most heavily damaged area, the sound of excavators still echoes amidst piles of soil and rocks. Functional forces and people take advantage of every hour to clean up, open roads, and collect remaining property.

Mr. Vang Van Dam, a resident of Chit village, is still in shock when mentioning the moment the fierce water rushed down.

The flood punctured the house, all belongings were swept away by the water. The clothes my family is wearing were all supported by philanthropists. Luckily, the whole family managed to climb onto the roof and survived," Mr. Dam shared.

According to Mr. Dam, immediately after the natural disaster, local authorities promptly provided food, drinking water and necessities to help people overcome the most difficult period.

What he and many households are hoping for at this time is to soon have a stable place to live and be supported with resettlement to feel secure in rebuilding their lives.

Sharing the same pain, Mr. Lo Van Hom choked up and recounted that the house and all family property had been swept away by the flood, and relatives are still being treated for injuries.

The Party and the State, and all levels of government are very concerned and help people a lot. Our family is very grateful," Mr. Hom said emotionally.

According to local statistics, the flash flood affected more than 1,100 households with over 5,800 people; killing 9 people, injuring 11 people, dozens of houses were swept away or heavily damaged. Total estimated damage is over 290 billion VND.

Joining hands to help people rebuild their lives

Immediately after the natural disaster, Lai Chau province mobilized many search and rescue forces, evacuated nearly 1,800 people to safe places, and urgently restored traffic, electricity, and distributed food, clean water and necessities to people in flood-affected areas.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Kieu Anh - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Lai Chau province said that the Provincial Relief Fund has issued an open letter calling on organizations, businesses, and philanthropists inside and outside the province to join hands to support people in flood-affected areas.

To date, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province has received more than 20 billion VND, and many more localities and units have registered to support about 16 billion VND.

Along with organizing delegations to visit families with deceased and injured people, we are currently supporting funeral expenses for households with deceased people.

In the coming time, the Provincial Fatherland Front will continue to mobilize resources to support about 20 households that have completely lost their houses, equip them with essential equipment when people move to new places of residence," Mr. Hoang Kieu Anh said.

According to the Muong Than commune government, the locality is urgently reviewing nearly 300 households living in landslide-prone areas to develop a relocation plan and arrange safe long-term accommodation.

The mud is still there, new house foundations are still being built. After the loss and pain, the clearest thing left in Muong Than at this time is the spirit of solidarity and sharing of the whole community, so that flood victims have more faith to start over from the simplest things.
