People long for embankments to escape landslides

People in Quang Tung commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) are looking forward to an embankment to help prevent landslides.

Landslide into residential land

The Roon River originates from the Hoanh Son range (Quang Binh province) and flows into the sea, passing through many communes, including Quang Tung and Quang Phu communes (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province). This is the place where thousands of local people earn their living, providing water for irrigation activities. However, for many years, people in Quang Tung commune have lived in fear because the "river god" is swallowing every square meter of land. The erosion has been going on year after year. Many families' land has been "eaten" 9-10m, close to residential land.

Mr. Tran Van Thong (born in 1952, Di Luan village, Quang Tung commune) said that he was very worried because not only his family's land, but also many other households in the village could be "swallowed" by the river at any time. In previous years, his family's land and that of his neighbors extended almost to the middle of the river. But because of the waves and after many floods, the land was gradually swallowed by the "river god". "Dozens of households in the village come out every day to look for every square meter of land. They hope that the village will have an embankment to stabilize the land and houses" - Mr. Thong said.

Near Mr. Thong's house, Mr. Tran Bao Trung (born in 1975, Di Luan village) is also in a state of anxiety, as his family's land is being washed away by water every day. "We are the original residents here. In the past, the riverbank area from where we stood to the river's edge was about 10m, but now it's gone, the river has encroached on where I stand. Every year, the river water rises and falls, and the current causes erosion," said Mr. Trung.

Affected more than 130 households

Mr. Tran Su - Head of Di Luan village - said that the incident has been going on for many years, the locality has proposed many times in voters' meetings, but so far there has been no construction. "The people's wish is to have a solid embankment, helping people ensure their daily life and farming. As it is now, everyone is really worried because the land is being lost every day but the people do not have enough money to repair it" - Mr. Su said.

Opposite the North of the Roon River bank, passing through Quang Tung Commune, is Quang Phu Commune. This place has experienced serious erosion. From the central budget in 2022, Quang Binh Province decided to build the Emergency Treatment Project, to repair the left embankment of the Roon River, from Hai Dong Village to Phu Xuan Village in Quang Phu Commune, with a length of 350m, and a total investment of 11 billion VND.

The project was invested in construction to prevent erosion, stabilize the left bank of the river mouth, protect the lives and property of households, protect the land area and infrastructure of Quang Phu commune.

Vice Chairman of Quang Tung Commune People's Committee Trinh Anh Tuan said that the Roon River bank through the area was eroded for about 2.5km. The problem of landslides on the right bank of the Roon River in the two villages of Di Luan and Phuc Kieu of Quang Tung Commune has been happening for a long time. Since the anti-erosion embankment on the Quang Phu side was built, the flow has strongly encroached on the Quang Tung side, causing a lot of landslides on the right river bank. This landslide affected more than 130 households in the two villages. Many families had landslides on residential land, greatly affecting the safety of the people.
