Son La currently has more than 10,500 hectares of hydroelectric reservoir surface. For many years, people in Quynh Nhai, Muong Chien, Muong Gion, Muong Sai, Chieng Lao, Muong La communes... have developed cage fish farming on a scale of thousands of cages.
The flood in late July and early August caused severe damage to many cage fish farming households here.

"Many cages are damaged, we are currently focusing on reinforcing the cages and cleaning the environment to prepare for the new crop" - said the representative of the Cooperative.

Mr. Quang Van Tuong's family in Ban Xa village currently has 21 cages raising white catfish, producing about 15 tons of meat fish each year.
During the recent flood, nearly a third of my familys fish cages were damaged. Currently, my family has invested in buying more materials to weld the cage frame, replace the old nets and clean the cages to prepare for releasing the new generation" - Mr. Tuong said.

In Muong La commune (formerly Muong Trai commune), there are currently over 550 cages, mainly raising types such as black cages, black cages, reptiles, and phi. The recent flood left many fish farming households penniless.
Mr. Lo Van Phuong - Head of Muong Trai Aquaculture Cooperative Group - said that the whole commune currently has about 40 cage fish farming households with an average income of 250350 million VND/year.
However, recently due to the impact of floods, many fish farming households have suffered heavy losses. Currently, households are focusing on overcoming the consequences of floods, while reinforcing and repairing cages to release new crops.
Mr. Phung Kim Son - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Son La province said that Son La province is promoting policies to support aquaculture on the lake, linking fish farming with community tourism, experience, enhancing trade promotion and consumption of processed products.
"The goal is to develop the fisheries in the direction of commodities, apply science and technology, minimize damage caused by extreme weather, sustainably and effectively in the long term." - Mr. Son said.

Protecting fish cages during the rainy season not only helps people minimize damage and maintain immediate income, but is also a foundation for developing fish cage farming in the Son La hydroelectric reservoir area in a stable, sustainable manner and adapting to climate change.
