Sea waves gradually swallow
In 2025, Quang Tri will continue to suffer from many major storms and extreme rain. High waves and high tides have caused serious erosion of many kilometers of coastline. Many embankments are damaged, directly threatening infrastructure and the lives of people in coastal areas.
In Bac Trach commune, the landslide situation is getting more and more serious. Along the 7km long coast of the commune, nearly 1km in front of the Ngu Ong temple area, the landslide was at an alarming level. Every rainy and stormy season, big waves wash away sand, cracking stone embankments, creating deep frog jaws, causing the temple, the spiritual home of fishermen, to risk being swept into the sea. About 450 households with 1,800 people living around this area are in the danger zone.
Mr. Hoang Van Hai, a resident of Thanh Xuan village, said that the locality could only dump boulders and build sandbags to limit the spread of landslides. "Every time there is a storm, the waves hit heavily, the sea water overflows Ngu Ong's Mausoleum. We were very scared. Hopefully, superiors will soon invest in a solid embankment to keep the land, keep the temple and make a living for the people" - Mr. Hai shared.
Not only Bac Trach, the erosion situation is also complicated in Bac Gianh ward. In recent years, this area has been continuously encroached by waves 10 to 20m deep, especially after storms No. 10 and 12. Previously, coastal mangrove forests were a "shield" against sand and wind, but now they are almost flat, making coastal land easily washed away by waves. Dozens of households living along the coastal road have to reinforce their houses and build sand fences to block them.
The People's Committee of Bac Gianh Ward said that the unenforced coastline of about 4.5km is seriously eroded, directly threatening coastal roads and residential areas. If another storm strengthens, the coastal road could be completely destroyed.

Embankment waiting for emergency investment
Faced with the urgent situation, Quang Tri province has agreed to include the project to build a 1km long embankment in front of Ngu Ong Temple in Bac Trach Commune in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026 - 2030, with a total investment of 160 billion VND from the central budget. People consider this a new ray of hope to protect the coast that is being eroded by nature every day.
According to Mr. Tran Hoai Nam - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province, the survey shows that many sections of the sea dyke have degraded, broken or eroded, while many areas without protective dykes are also being strongly eroded.
After storm No. 10, most landslides were greatly affected, with some landslides right next to residential areas. The province has directed localities to urgently overcome and temporarily reinforce with sand and gravel sacks to limit the spread of landslides, and at the same time develop long-term investment plans in priority order" - Mr. Nam said.
Recently, Mr. Tran Phong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province - directly inspected the embankment along the Gianh River section through Thanh Xuan village, Bac Trach commune. Here, the flood caused a landslide of the embankment roof of more than 200m long, some places were 5m deep, many concrete blocks were skewed, boulders were washed away, the foundation was hollow, threatening 18 households and the Thanh Xuan - Phu Kinh inter-village road. The provincial chairman has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment to urgently support the locality in developing a remedial plan and proposing capital for repairs to prevent the risk of landslides from spreading.
