Gia Lai - Heavy rain causes localized flooding on many roads in Quy Nhon, authorities propose to clear the drainage system to limit flooding when heavy rain continues.

On September 11, in an exchange with Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Duc Toan - Chairman of Quy Nhon Ward People's Committee (Gia Lai) - said that he had requested the Department of Construction to handle and clear the drainage system on many roads that experienced localized flooding after heavy rain.

Previously, on the evening of September 9, prolonged heavy rain caused flooding in many areas in the ward, including Le Duc Tho - Ngo Gia Kham intersection, Dam market area, Phan Chu Trinh - Le Van Huu intersection, Le Dai Hanh street (section in front of Tran Quoc Toan Elementary School), Xuan Dieu street (section from Chien Thang monument to Le Loi street), Dien Hong - Nguyen Tu - Tran An Tu branch street, Hoa Lu street to Y-shaped bridge, Nguyen Tat Thanh - Tran Hung Dao intersection, Vu Bao - Nguyen Tat Thanh intersection and Nguyen Hien street.

Immediately after grasping the situation, the Ward People's Committee coordinated with the Environment Company to arrange forces to inspect flooded points, put up warning ropes, clear the flow and implement temporary flood control measures. After the rain stopped, the water in the flooded areas receded.

According to Quy Nhon Ward People's Committee, the main cause of flooding is heavy rainfall, the flooded locations have low terrain, and water is collected from other areas. Meanwhile, the drainage system has been invested through many stages, not synchronized in height and drainage direction, so flooding occurs when it rains heavily.

To date, Quy Nhon ward has not recorded any loss of life or property in flooded areas due to heavy rain. However, the province is currently entering the rainy season and heavy rain has continuously appeared in recent days. Therefore, dredging and clearing the drainage system early is necessary to limit the risk of flooding.

The central and eastern areas of the province have rain, moderate rain, in some places heavy rain and thunderstorms, common rainfall of 30-50mm, in some places over 70mm. The meteorological agency warns of the risk of heavy rain in a short time.

Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas. People need to be wary of the risk of landslides in areas with steep terrain and weak geological foundations.
