In mid-December 2024, households in Lao Cai are busy taking care of their vegetable beds, preparing for Tet - the time when the demand for clean vegetables is highest in the year.
According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper in Lao Cai city (Lao Cai province), in the fields, farmers are taking care of vegetables, while others are improving the land for cultivation.
In Binh Minh Ward (Lao Cai City), Ms. Ha Thi Hang - a farmer with more than 10 years of experience growing vegetables, shared: “This is the busiest time of the year. My family grows about 2 sao of vegetables, mainly chrysanthemum greens, water spinach, water spinach and lettuce to supply the market during Tet. Currently, the family is focusing on taking care of the vegetables so that they grow enough days.”
According to Ms. Hang, to ensure the vegetables grow well, her family watered them regularly and used organic fertilizers. The green, neat rows of vegetables not only bring high economic efficiency but also meet the people's safe consumption needs, especially during the Lunar New Year 2025.
While carrying water to water vegetables, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang - a vegetable farmer in Lao Cai city, was excited because vegetables were selling well, and he earned 1 million VND after selling a bed of chrysanthemum greens.
“During the storm and flood in early September, households here lost everything because the high water level ruined all their crops. Currently, people are starting to grow vegetables again. The types that are easy to grow, suitable for the soil and grow quickly will be prioritized to serve the upcoming Tet holiday,” Mr. Thang shared.
According to Mr. Thang, the cold weather helps vegetables grow slowly but still retain their freshness and quality, making them very popular with consumers.
“We are planting and taking care of vegetables for Tet. Hopefully, the vegetables will grow well until harvest time and have a good price. As for those that cannot be harvested at the end of the year, we will keep them for sale after Tet,” said Mr. Thang.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper's investigation, the impact of storm No. 3 and the storm's circulation caused damage to hundreds of hectares of crops and trees of Lao Cai people.
After the storm and flood, people prioritize planting short-term and intercropped crops to serve the Tet market at the end of the year.
Along with that, authorities at all levels also have support policies on plant varieties and part of the funding to help people restore production activities to stabilize their lives.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Vice Chairman of Binh Minh Ward People's Committee Vu Hai Dang said: "The local vegetable cultivation area is not too large, but it was completely damaged after the storm and flood due to rising river water causing flooding. Thanks to the support of the city, up to now, people have improved the land, restored production and basically stabilized."
