Unsafe mining
On May 29, information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thanh Hoa province said that the inter-sectoral delegation of the province has coordinated with the locality to conduct actual inspections at the stone mine area in Cam Tu commune.
Through inspection, the inter-sectoral delegation initially recorded that Anh Tuan Co., Ltd. had many violations in the implementation of the stone mining process. This company was approved to mine stone according to a layer-by-layer process, from top to bottom; dismantling stone with blasting drills combined with cleavers and wire cutters to mine block stone.
However, the company did not follow the approved process and design but organized stone mining from the bottom up, without cutting the mining layer, mining in the style of cutting the foot of the mountain, creating a frog's mouth in the foot of the mountain area. This is one of the factors causing labor unsafety, leading to the accident, killing 3 workers.
Regarding the issue of comprehensive occupational safety and health at this stone mine, because the investigating agency is seizing documents, there is no basis to determine whether the unit complies with the provisions of law on occupational safety and health at the mine or not.
Also according to the results of actual inspection, the mining site still has the situation of scattered rocks, suspended rocks, posing a risk of landslides, causing unsafety in the mine area.
The inspection team discovered that the enterprise did not build a trench for workers to go up the mountain, the section from elevation +80 to elevation +160.
Unpredictable consequences
Regarding the labor accident that killed 3 people at the above stone mine, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police have prosecuted the case, prosecuted the defendant, and temporarily detained Mr. Luu Van Hai - Director of Anh Tuan Co., Ltd. - to clarify violations in the stone mine exploitation process. The business owner must face legal responsibility for violations in exploitation.
The incident shows that if labor safety regulations are not complied with, not only Anh Tuan Co., Ltd. but any business may suffer unpredictable consequences when an accident occurs.
Statistics from the Thanh Hoa Provincial Department of Home Affairs show that from the beginning of 2026 to date, the whole province has recorded 11 labor accidents, killing 12 people and seriously injuring 1 person. Among them, there are 2 cases related to stone mining and processing, killing 4 people.
