On September 22, the Military Command (CHQS) of Quang Tri province said that forces are urgently deploying to search for and repatriate the remains of 11 special forces martyrs who sacrificed in the battle on April 29, 1965 in the Doc Mieu area, Gio Linh commune, Quang Tri province.
The search operation was deployed from September 16, responding to the "Operation 500 Days and Nights" to search, repatriate and identify the remains of martyrs.
Based on information provided by witnesses, after a process of research and verification, the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command directed Team No. 2 for Searching and Repatriating Martyrs' Remains to coordinate with local Party committees, authorities and relevant forces to organize surveys and zone off locations suspected of having graves of 11 martyrs.
However, the search work faced many difficulties because the Doc Mieu area once witnessed fierce battles during the war. After more than 60 years, the terrain has changed a lot, war traces have been covered by time and people's production activities, making it difficult to accurately determine the location of the graves.
On September 22, a working delegation of the Quang Tri Provincial Military Command led by Colonel Truong Viet Hai - Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command, Standing Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for searching, repatriating and identifying martyrs' remains of the province, directly went to the Doc Mieu area to inspect and direct the search work.
At the scene, the working group inspected the actual search area, listened to reports on the progress, survey results, information collection and difficulties and obstacles in the process of performing tasks.
Colonel Truong Viet Hai acknowledged and praised the spirit of responsibility, dedication and persistence of officers and staff of Team 2 for Searching and Repatriating Martyrs' Remains and participating forces. At the same time, he requested the search force to continue to carefully review the area, effectively exploit information sources, and expand the search scope when necessary.
In particular, it is necessary to closely coordinate with local Party committees, authorities and people, especially witnesses, people who used to live and fight in the Doc Mieu area to collect more valuable information to serve the determination of the location of martyrs' remains. The search and repatriation process must be carried out strictly, meticulously, in accordance with procedures, ensuring absolute safety for people and vehicles.
The effort to search for and repatriate the remains of 11 special forces martyrs at Doc Mieu is not only aimed at bringing the martyrs back to their homeland, families and comrades, but also contributes to clarifying information about the battles of the past, meeting the expectations of the martyrs' relatives.
