Quang Tri - The working delegation of Military Region 4 Command has inspected and encouraged forces performing the task of collecting martyrs' remains at Cau Nhi.

On July 23, the Military Command of Quang Tri province confirmed that the delegation of the Command of Military Region 4 led by Lieutenant General Ha Tho Binh had just come to offer flowers and incense to commemorate heroic martyrs at Truong Son National Martyrs' Cemetery and Road 9 National Martyrs' Cemetery (Quang Tri province).

After the funeral, the working delegation directly went to the Cau Nhi area, Nam Hai Lang commune (Quang Tri province) to inspect, encourage and give gifts to officers and staff of Team 584 and Team 589 (Quang Tri Provincial Military Command). These are forces that are searching day and night for and exhuming the remains of martyrs of Battalion 6, Regiment 88, Division 308 who sacrificed in May 1972.

From July 20 to July 22, the repatriation teams deployed surveys, expanded the search scope at suspicious locations and repatriated 7 sets of martyrs' remains.

The remains were heavily decomposed, leaving only bone fragments, tibia, teeth and many battlefield artifacts such as tanks, shoe soles, belts, hammocks, grenades, AK magazines, and medicine bottles.

Currently, 7 sets of martyrs' remains have been brought to the solemn shrine at the Temple of Martyrs of Regiment 88 (Division 308) in the Cau Nhi area for incense offering and preparation for taking biological samples for DNA testing to determine identity.

Praising the spirit of responsibility of officers and soldiers of the repatriation teams, Lieutenant General Ha Tho Binh requested the forces to continue to promote the implementation of the Campaign "500 days and nights to promote the search, exhumation and identification of martyrs' remains" with the determination to focus on reviewing and expanding the search scope to bring them back to their families and comrades.

Cau Nhi area (now Nam Chanh village, Nam Hai Lang commune) was the place where the fierce battle of Battalion 6, Regiment 88, Division 308 took place in May 1972.

According to the unit's history and the story of veteran Bui Duc Loc - former soldier of Company 9, Battalion 6, in the early morning of May 26, 1972, the unit organized to cross the river to attack Cau Nhi village and was suddenly attacked by the enemy with strong firepower. The battle killed about 93 officers and soldiers.

After the battle, the enemy used bulldozers to dig long, deep trenches to collect and bury the bodies of the soldiers in the rice fields and tea gardens.

From 1992 to June 2026, based on information from local people, functional forces searched and collected a total of 29 sets of martyrs' remains in the garden area of Mr. Bui Huu Tuan (19 sets of remains), Pham Huu Nghia (7 sets of remains) and Pham Huu Lam (3 sets of remains). All 29 sets of remains have been brought back for solemn burial.
