On July 10, the Steering Committee for searching, repatriating and identifying martyrs' remains of Quang Tri province organized a workshop to verify information about martyrs and martyrs' graves in the Cau Nhi area, Nam Hai Lang commune. The workshop aims to implement the Campaign "500 days and nights to promote the search, repatriation and identification of martyrs' remains" launched by the Deputy Prime Minister.
Mr. Le Van Bao - Member of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Provincial Steering Committee chaired the conference.
Attending the workshop were Colonel Le Van Son, Deputy Director of the Department of Social Policy, General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army; Deputy Chief of Office of the National Steering Committee; Major General Le Van Trung, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Deputy Political Commissar of Military Region 4, Head of the Steering Committee for searching, repatriating and identifying martyrs' remains of Military Region 4.

At the conference, it was clarified that the Cau Nhi area (now Nam Chanh village, Nam Hai Lang commune) was the place where the fierce battle of Battalion 6, Regiment 88, Division 308 took place in May 1972.
According to the unit's history and the story of veteran Bui Duc Loc (former soldier of Company 9, Battalion 6), in the early morning of May 26, 1972, the unit organized a river crossing attack into Cau Nhi village and was suddenly attacked by the enemy with strong firepower. The battle killed about 93 officers and soldiers. To date, veterans have identified the identities of 80 people.

After the battle, the enemy used bulldozers to dig long, deep trenches to collect and bury the bodies of the soldiers in the rice fields and tea gardens.
From 1992 to now, based on information from local people, functional forces have searched and collected a total of 29 sets of martyrs' remains in the garden area of Mr. Bui Huu Tuan (19 sets of remains), Pham Huu Nghia (7 sets of remains) and Pham Huu Lam (3 sets of remains). All 29 sets of remains have been brought back for solemn burial.
Notably, among the artifacts found along with 9 remains collected by Team 584 in the period 2024 - 2025, there is 1 coffin engraved with the symbol "Tuyen" and the number series "170017". Through comparison, functional agencies have identified martyr Tran Minh Tuyen (from Thai Binh), a soldier of Company 9, Battalion 6, Regiment 88. This coincidence confirms that the above location is the area where the collective burial of the martyrs is located. Thus, currently, on the old Cau Nhi battlefield, there are still about 26 to 54 martyrs' remains that have not been found or collected.

Recently, on June 27, 2026, the Provincial Military Command coordinated with the Land-penetrating Radar Task Force to conduct field surveys in rice fields and abandoned fields. Initially, the equipment detected uneven geological signals in the rice field area, opening up an important scientific basis for zoning for search.
Speaking at the conclusion of the workshop, Mr. Le Van Bao requested agencies and units to urgently receive information sources, complete dossiers to immediately deploy the expanded search plan. According to the planned plan, Team 584 in coordination with the militia force of Nam Hai Lang commune will focus on excavating and searching at high altitudes for 30 days in the area of rice fields, abandoned fields and melaleuca fields stretching close to the riverbank in the Cau Nhi area. Functional forces will combine mechanization (excavators) and manual methods when detecting traces to soon bring the heroic martyrs back to their families and comrades.
