According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, in just over a month (from July 1 to August 5, 2025), African swine fever broke out in 52 communes, wards and towns, causing more than 49,000 sick pigs to be destroyed, with a total weight of nearly 2,650 tons. More than 7,750 livestock households were affected, causing serious economic damage.
According to the agricultural sector of Quang Ngai province, the reason for the widespread epidemic is the low vaccination rate; most small-scale livestock households are still subjective and have not strictly followed preventive measures. Thanks to the synchronous implementation of many solutions, the basic epidemic has been controlled. The Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment continuously direct, strengthen inspection, and promptly handle outbreaks...
The agricultural sector of Quang Ngai province recommends that pig herding should only be carried out at facilities that meet biosafety standards, have quarantine areas, standard barns and a guaranteed waste treatment system. The breeding animals must have a clear origin, have been fully vaccinated and quarantined before being raised.
Livestock farmers need to closely monitor their livestock, immediately report to the veterinary agency when detecting any abnormalities; at the same time, maintain hygiene in the barn to cut off pathogens and prevent disease recurrence.
According to Mr. Do Van Chung - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ngai province, herding must be focused on, only at the grassroots level meeting safety criteria. Livestock facilities must ensure appropriate areas, avoid lack of disease handling areas or place barns in locations prone to pathogens. For farms, when appraising, it is mandatory to have a quarantine area and a treatment and destruction area. Small-scale livestock farming households in residential areas need to ensure a minimum area to both limit pollution and reduce the risk of spreading the epidemic.
"When re-herding, at the location, we must disinfect, destroy poison, the barn must meet the minimum area for quarantine. Second, for breeds, they must choose a clear origin, be quarantined and fully vaccinated before being kept, especially vaccinated against African swine fever" - Mr. Chung recommended.
