Garbage rampant on National Highway 20
According to reporters' records, along National Highway 20 stretching for dozens of kilometers through Hoa Ninh, Di Linh, Gia Hiep, Ninh Gia communes, stagnant waste often appears, posing a potential risk of environmental pollution and unsightly appearance of the area. Notably, the section of National Highway 20 about 15km long through Ninh Gia commune has dozens of large and small garbage points existing for many months but have not been completely treated.
Garbage accumulates for a long time, emitting a strong stench, flies cling, directly affecting people's lives. In front of many households, grocery stores, eateries, garbage piles up, causing pollution and unsafe hygiene.
Ms. Tran Thi Nguyet (Ninh Gia commune) angrily said that garbage stagnates for a long time, the stench is heavy, and flies are everywhere. People have repeatedly complained to the local authorities, but the situation has not only not improved but also tends to increase.
A similar situation also occurred in Di Linh, Hoa Ninh, and Gia Hiep communes. After the most recent collection on January 20, garbage continues to pile up at many points.
According to people, the time near the Binh Ngo Lunar New Year 2026, the demand for cleaning and shopping increases, causing the amount of garbage generated to be many times higher than on normal days. Without fundamental solutions, the risk of garbage "surrounding" residential areas during Tet is unavoidable.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (Hoa Ninh commune) worriedly said that garbage has been congested for the past half month, and the stench is spreading. Old garbage has not been treated, while new garbage is increasing, causing people to face the risk of living with pollution throughout Tet.
Many reasons for slow waste treatment
Talking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Trung Kien - Director of the Di Linh Regional Construction Investment Project Management Board - said that the main reason for the accumulation of waste is that the Gung Re landfill is overloaded.
Not only along National Highway 20, waste in many residential areas of Di Linh district (old) is also congested. Currently, the unit is coordinating with localities to find collection and treatment plans to ensure environmental sanitation and urban aesthetics so that people can enjoy spring and celebrate Tet.
Mr. Vo Huu Xuan - Chairman of Ninh Gia Commune People's Committee - said that the situation of waste accumulation stems from many causes. The locality has worked with the Project Management Board to urge collection work. "This is the responsibility of the collection unit, the commune government is responsible for coordinating, supervising and promoting implementation" - Mr. Xuan said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vo Van Thuong - Deputy Director of the Duc Trong Regional Construction Investment Project Management Board - said that from January 1, 2026, according to the decision of the People's Committee of Lam Dong province, public service tasks, including waste collection, are assigned to the People's Committees of communes to directly manage and organize implementation.
However, to date, many localities have not signed contracts and have not advanced funds, causing the unit to have no source to pay workers' salaries, gasoline and transportation costs. In addition, some collection vehicles have been damaged, expired registration and insurance, leading to the collection of garbage being interrupted.
Faced with the reality of prolonged waste congestion, seriously affecting people's lives, people hope that all levels of government and functional agencies will soon remove obstacles, organize waste collection and treatment in a timely manner, and restore a clean and beautiful environment for people to celebrate Tet and enjoy spring safely.
