In recent days, plastic waste and domestic waste have appeared on many roads and key traffic junctions leading to the center of Can Tho city, causing urban unsightliness and affecting the image of a central city in the Mekong Delta region.
Recorded on Vo Van Kiet street, Can Tho City - an important traffic route connecting Can Tho International Airport with the city center area, many types of waste such as: plastic cups, styrofoam boxes, nylon bags, mattresses and food packaging are thrown along both sides of the road. Some locations on the roadside and vacant land along the route have spontaneous piles of small and large garbage, creating a messy image.
Notably, this situation is not new. Previously, Lao Dong Newspaper had repeatedly reported on garbage being dumped illegally along Vo Van Kiet street. However, according to actual records, the problem has not been completely resolved.
A similar situation is also recorded at the intersection of National Highway 1A - National Highway 61C, IC3, Nguyen Van Linh - Le Phuoc Tho... where thousands of vehicles pass by every day. Many household trash bags containing mostly single-use plastic products are left on the roadside or under the foot of overpasses.
Mr. Duy Tan (Long Tuyen ward, Can Tho city) said that Vo Van Kiet street is a beautiful road, a place for tourists to go from the airport to the city. However, the appearance of garbage in many places has affected the urban face.
At the intersection of National Highway 1A - National Highway 61C, Ms. Tuyet Mai (Cai Rang ward, Can Tho city) said that the main reason stems from the awareness of a part of the people. According to her, many people eat and drink on the road and then conveniently throw garbage onto the roadside or vacant lots.
Can Tho City Department of Agriculture and Environment informed that it has coordinated with localities to discuss and exchange to strengthen the work of cleaning and public sanitation in the city's gateway areas such as: At the IC3 intersection between National Highway 1 and National Highway 91B (Cai Rang ward); at Binh Thuy bridge on Cach Mang Thang Tam street (Binh Thuy ward), Ba Lang intersection (intersection between National Highway 1 and National Highway 61C)...
In addition, it has advised the City People's Committee to launch an emulation movement to implement the campaign "All people participate in environmental protection"; minimize the generation, classification, collection, and treatment of waste for a Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful Vietnam in Can Tho city in the period 2026-2030 according to Plan No. 186/KH-UBND dated April 21, 2026 of Can Tho City People's Committee.
Mr. Dong Van Thanh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Can Tho City - proposed that sectors strengthen inspection of environmental sanitation work, and at the same time rectify and promptly handle the situation of domestic waste accumulating on sidewalks, traffic routes, residential areas, causing environmental pollution, urban unsightliness, causing public outrage.
