The above information was given at a working session on February 27 between Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) and Nghe An Provincial People's Committee on the implementation of 3 items to renovate and expand Vinh International Airport in 2025.
3 main projects include: expanding and renovating the aircraft parking lot with a total investment of 236 billion VND, ensuring the exploitation of 9 parking locations for code C aircraft; renovating and expanding the T1 passenger terminal with a cost of 68 billion VND, increasing the service capacity to 3.3.5 million passengers/year by 2030 and repairing the existing runway of 2,400 m long, 45 m wide with a system of 2 taxiways, with a total investment of more than 623 billion VND. To carry out the final items, Vinh airport will have to temporarily close for 6 months.
During the period when Vinh airport is no longer operating, passengers in the North Central region can choose flights from Tho Xuan airport (Thanh Hoa) or Dong Hoi (Quang Binh).
At the meeting, the parties agreed to soon arrange 3.3 hectares of land in the existing parking lot to expand and renovate, and at the same time build an investment roadmap for projects according to the plan such as the construction of runway No. 2, expansion of the parking lot of terminal T2 and construction of the terminal T2 passenger terminal.
Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee Le Hong Vinh suggested that ACV speed up the progress to reduce airport closure time, and agreed with the proposal to extend the existing runway by 600 m to receive larger aircraft.
ACV leaders committed to synchronously implementing all three projects and ensuring completion before December 30, 2025.
Vinh Airport was put into use at the end of 2003, currently has a runway 2,400 m long, 45 m wide, with a designed capacity of 2.75 million passengers per year. The airport serves 21-26 flights per day.
In July 2023, the airport had to close for nearly 16 hours due to cracked asphalt concrete on about 40 square meters of runway.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Vinh International Airport has seen rapid growth, the number of passengers far exceeded forecasts, so renovation and expansion are necessary.
