From 4 p.m. every day, fish and shrimp from all over the Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir are transported by fishermen, which is also the time when Na Hang fishing port (Na Hang town, Tuyen Quang) begins to bustle with buyers and sellers.
Na Hang fishing port is currently the largest seafood purchasing and transit point in the Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir. From here, shrimp and fish are caught naturally and transported back to Tuyen Quang city and then to many provinces in the North.
Having made a living on the hydroelectric reservoir for many years, Ms. Chau Thi Le said that almost all of the fish and shrimp caught naturally by fishermen on the lake are transported here. There are as many traders as there are buyers.
"Prices go up and down, usually at 25,000 VND/kg of giant freshwater fish and 50,000 - 80,000 VND/kg of shrimp. My husband and I earn 500 - 700 thousand VND per day from selling shrimp and fish," Ms. Le shared.
In the Na Hang fishing port area, some households have invested in cage and net systems to purchase and store natural shrimp and fish from fishermen, which will then be resold to traders and transported for consumption by refrigerated trucks.
Mr. Tran Hung Son has been buying shrimp and fish in the Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir for more than ten years. Every day, Mr. Son transports more than 2.5 tons of seafood from here to restaurants in Hanoi.
"Tuyen Quang hydroelectric lake is clean so the quality of shrimp and fish is much better than other areas. Although the transportation time takes nearly 5 hours, the price is high," said Mr. Son.
Tuyen Quang Hydropower Plant, which came into operation in 2006, has created a large reservoir area of over 8,000 hectares, opening up aquaculture and fishing opportunities for thousands of people.
However, the exploitation of aquatic resources on Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoir is currently facing a number of challenges. Some people use destructive fishing methods, such as light nets with thick mesh, affecting aquatic resources and the ecological environment.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Vi Ngoc Quy - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Na Hang district said that Na Hang fishing port mainly serves the purchase of natural shrimp and fish in the lake area.
"Exploiting aquatic products on the lake has become the livelihood of many households. In 2024 alone, the output reached more than 439 tons. To protect aquatic resources, authorities regularly propagate so that people do not use prohibited tools and substances in fishing and exploitation," Mr. Quy informed.
