Continuing anxiety as embankment degrades
The Co Chien river embankment line through Tan Ngai ward, Vinh Long province has experienced subsidence and cracks in many locations for many years. This situation affects people's travel and daily life.
Since the beginning of May 2026, Lao Dong Newspaper has reported on the situation of many subsidence points on the embankment line that have been prolonged but have not been repaired. To date, repairs have not been implemented, causing people to worry about the risk of further damage.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Trung, Tan Ngai ward, said that he regularly exercises in the morning and evening along the embankment. Many prolonged subsidence points make people cautious when moving, especially when it is dark.
According to Mr. Trung, in the coming time, entering the rainy season and annual high tides, people are worried that subsidence locations may continue to develop seriously. Therefore, early recovery is very necessary.
Mr. Tran Gia Hau said that he and his friends often go to the embankment area to walk, admire the river scenery and the lighting system of My Thuan bridge. However, the lighting system is currently seriously degraded.
Previously, street light poles had not been completely lost electrical wires, but now almost 100% of poles have lost wires. Many lights are also damaged, with the risk of falling at any time," Mr. Hau said.
Overcome in 2026
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Van Cong Tri - Vice Chairman of Tan Ngai Ward People's Committee, Vinh Long province - said that the embankment through the locality is more than 3,000m long, currently recording 31 subsidence points with a total length of more than 1km.
According to Mr. Tri, in addition to subsidence, the lighting system on the route is also affected by about 800m of stolen power lines. Many light poles are no longer working, some equipment is degraded, posing a potential safety risk.
Because this is a large project, with a remedial cost of more than 7 billion VND, the process of carrying out procedures requires the coordination of many functional sectors of the province.
Currently, units are starting to deploy construction, focusing on solidifying subsidence points on the embankment line. The expected construction time is about 60 days, striving to complete the restoration part in 2026.
The lighting system will be completely replaced in early 2027. The synchronous repair is expected to ensure safety for people traveling, exercising and living on the embankment line.
