The project to expand the North-South expressway east section Cao Bo - Mai Son, with a total length of 15.245km, the starting point connecting to the Cau Gie - Ninh Binh expressway and the ending point connecting to the North-South expressway east section Mai Son - QL45.
The scale of investment is expanded from 4 lanes as at present to 6 complete lanes, roadbed width is 32.5m; road surface width is 22.5m; building additional bridge units on the left side of the route at 4 locations (Cao Bo bridge, Cam bridge, QL10 overpass and Quan Vinh bridge); intelligent traffic system (ITS); vehicle load control system; toll stations are built synchronously according to highway standards.

The project is invested by the Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Transport (now the Department of Construction) with a total investment of 1,875.616 billion VND from the central budget.
The project started in March 2025, and to date, the road section has been basically completed and traffic has been opened. The ITS traffic system; vehicle weight control system; non-stop toll station have not yet been installed.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Ngoc - Director of the Construction Investment Project Management Board (under the Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Construction) - said that currently the road section, guardrail system, signs, median strips, road markings... on the entire route have been basically completed and opened to traffic.
Regarding the deployment of ITS traffic system installation; vehicle load control system and non-stop toll station, this is one of the items of the Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway expansion project. Currently, the investor has completed the dossier according to the opinions of the Economic - Construction Investment Management Department, the Informatics Center, the Thang Long Project Management Board under the Ministry of Construction and the Vietnam Road Administration and is submitting for approval.

It is expected that the deployment of the ITS traffic management system, non-stop electronic toll collection and vehicle load control on the Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway will be completed and put into use in December 2026" - Mr. Ngoc said.
Previously, the Ministry of Construction also issued a document requesting the Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Construction to urgently deploy a smart traffic management system, electronic non-stop toll collection and vehicle load control on the Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway.
The North-South Expressway project, Cao Bo - Mai Son section, was started in December 2019 with a total main route length of 15.2km; service road 22km; the entire route has 7 bridges and 3 people's underpasses. The project is invested by Ninh Binh Provincial Department of Transport (now Department of Construction). Phase 1 of the project has been completed and put into operation since the beginning of 2022.
To date, the project has been expanded from 4 lanes to 6 complete lanes and is deploying the installation of a smart traffic system (ITS); vehicle load control system; toll stations are built synchronously according to highway standards.
