The Phan Thiet - Phu Quy shipping channel has been silted up for a long time. The reason is that the channel has not been dredged for many years, leading to the channel being narrowed at the estuary.

According to records, currently, high-speed ships operating the Phan Thiet - Phu Quy passenger transport route must have trawlers when entering and exiting the anchorage location. A long, large sandbar is located between the entrance and exit of Phan Thiet transport port. High-speed boats and fishing boats of fishermen must also wait for the tide to peak before going to sea.

A captain of a high-speed ship said that many transport ships and fishing boats are always worried when entering and leaving Phan Thiet port due to unsafe channel depth. In addition, the situation of the steering duck meeting with garbage and young mud caused technical problems.

The Department of Maritime Port Authority of Binh Thuan province said that according to the technical specifications of Phan Thiet maritime route with an actual depth of only about 0.6 m in some sections and the boat quay is only 1.1 m deep. To clear the flow, about 120,000 m3 needs to be dredged, the Port Authority is coordinating with the locality to determine the location of the after-dredging dumping site. When the new location is agreed, a Phan Thiet - Phu Quy maritime access project will be implemented.

Phan Thiet estuary was seriously flooded, affecting maritime traffic, but it has not been dredged in time. Currently, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (now the Department of Agriculture and Environment) is coordinating with the People's Committee of Phan Thiet city and related departments and branches to find locations for material dumping after dredging to clear the channel, ensuring safe train travel.
